Year Six

Dear Year 6 Families,

This term has been bustling with activity for our Year 6 students, both inside and outside the classroom. With so many interesting things going on, our students are engaged, enthused and excited.

Inquiry

Our students worked on unpacking our inquiry within the Transdisciplinary Theme of 'Who We Are.' They have inquired into a line into the influence of our emotions on our behaviour. Through reflective activities and discussions, they were encouraged to identify and articulate the myriad of emotions they encounter daily. Central to our inquiry is the concept of regulating emotions. Our students explored strategies for managing their feelings in healthy and constructive ways. Whether it's taking deep breaths, practising mindfulness, or seeking support from trusted adults, our students are building a toolkit for emotional well-being that will serve them well into adulthood.

Reading and Writing

During Reading and Writing lessons, students uncovered the magic of figurative language tools as they learned how to add depth, imagery, and emotion to their poetry writing. By understanding similes, metaphors, alliteration and other poetic devices, our students discovered new ways to paint vivid pictures with words. They explored the art of found poetry, a unique form of creative expression where existing texts are repurposed and reimagined to create something entirely new.

Mathematics

In our Mathematics classes, students engaged in dynamic learning experiences aimed at strengthening their mathematical abilities. Through explicit teaching lessons and the innovative LED (Launch-Explore-Discuss) approach, they mastered the identification and description of factors and multiples of whole numbers and refined their mental strategies for utilising the four operations.

Beach Program

Beyond the classroom, our students had an amazing time participating in our

annual Beach Program run by Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club. From swimming to running, board paddling to wading, and engaging in various activities and games, our students had a blast while learning valuable skills and knowledge about beach safety. They delved into essential beach safety knowledge and learned how to identify rip currents, crucial information that could potentially save lives. Throughout the program, our students built their life-saving and water-safety knowledge, equipping themselves with the skills needed to stay safe in and around the water. We are incredibly proud of our Year 6 students for their enthusiasm, courage, and dedication during the beach program. They have not only gained valuable skills and knowledge but have also embraced the learner profile attributes of being open-minded and risk-takers!
