From the Leadership Team

In the spirit of reconciliation, Modbury School acknowledges the Traditional Custodians

of the country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community.

We pay our respect to their elders past and present and extend that respect to all

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.

Dear families,

It's been a busy few weeks at Modbury School with lots happening. We hope you enjoy reading through the newsletter and seeing all the positive things occurring at Mondury School P-6.

Reading at home

Reading at home supplements our literacy instruction by providing students with an opportunity to build on the skills and knowledge that they are developing at school. Our teachers will regularly listen to students reading, and make formal assessments based on their letter/sound knowledge and comprehension.

Our students learn to read from decodable texts, which are books containing specific sounds that the students have been taught at school. These decodable texts should be able to be read with growing confidence and no guessing.

As students demonstrate greater mastery with their reading, we see confident and capable readers move beyond decodable texts, and begin to develop their skills and independence as life-long readers through choosing books based on interest.

As parents/caregivers you can support your child's reading in these ways:

  • Listening to them read- encourage re-reading of their text with increasing fluency and expression.
  • Read with them. Discuss new vocabulary and talk through the concepts and ideas explored in the texts.
  • Read to them. Children's listening is far better than their reading comprehension, and will be until about Year 6. Reading to them fosters a love of reading and models effective reading practices. It's also time well spent with your child.

Swimming Week

All our students in years Reception to 5 have participated in the Water Safety program at Waterworld this week. It's been a fun and busy week, students have been gaining valuable water skills as well as building positive relationships with each other as we have been walking to and from Waterworld.

Easter Break

Friday 29 March and Monday 1 April are public holidays for the Easter long weekend. We would like to wish all our families a safe and happy weekend and look forward to seeing all our children back at school on Tuesday 2 April at 8:55 am.

Mother's Day Stall - Term 2

Our Mother's Day Stall will be available in Week 2 of next term for our students to purchase small gifts for Mother's Day.

Our Preschool will be able to visit the stall and purchase gifts on Tuesday 7 May and our R-6 students will visit the stall on Wednesday 8 May.

As we are moving to a cashless system, we will be using pre-paid vouchers for our students to buy gifts at the Mother's Day stall. These vouchers can be purchased through the Qkr! app. Students who have purchased vouchers will be provided with them on the day their class visits the stall. Please note: No cash will be accepted at the Mother's Day stall.

The vouchers are available on our Qkr! app now.

Our Garden - can you help?

We are busy working in our school garden and each class has their own garden bed to look after and grow delicious healthy food.

Can you help with any donations of seedlings for our classes to help promote sustainability and the love of nature?

Fundraising for Year 6 Graduation Ceremony

National Close the Gap Day

Friday 21st March was National Close the Gap Day 🖤💛❤️

We want to see every Aboriginal child and young person in South Australia thrive academically, culturally, and socially.

Closing the Gap is a shared goal and a shared responsibility. It means building and strengthening partnerships between Aboriginal students, parents, carers, families, and communities across our services.

The Aboriginal Education Strategy 2019-2029 is an important part of SA’s commitment to Closing the Gap. The strategy was designed in collaboration with families, communities, and local organisations, and expands across the early years into schooling and is followed by pathways to success beyond school.
