Navigating the Path of Physical Education: A Glimpse into Junior and Middle School HPE at GSSC

In the bustling corridors of GSSC the realm of Health and Physical Education (HPE) for junior and middle school students is a vibrant journey through a carefully designed curriculum. With a keen focus on the Victorian Curriculum, students in Year 7, 8, and 9 are immersed in a diverse range of activities that not only promote physical fitness but also instil a love for lifelong sports.

Year 7 PE: Fitness and Basketball Extravaganza

For the spirited Year 7 students, the initial weeks of the school year usher in a gymnasium experience dedicated to post-fitness testing. Understanding the baseline fitness levels sets the stage for tailored physical activities. As the weeks progress, the basketball courts become the epicentre of outdoor enthusiasm. From Week 3 to Week 10, students engage in the artistry of basketball, followed by the implementation of SEPEP—an initiative that encourages teamwork and sportsmanship.

Year 8 PE: Outdoor Adventures with Handball, Soccer, and Netball

Year 8 embarks on an outdoor adventure, embracing the fresh air and open spaces for the first four weeks. European handball, soccer, and netball take centre stage as students hone their skills and delve into the strategic aspects of these team sports. Transitioning into the latter half of the semester, the focus shifts indoors when available, providing a dynamic change in environment while maintaining the vigour of physical activities.

Year 9 PE: Gymnasium Challenges and Lifelong Sports Exploration

As Year 9 students progress, the gymnasium becomes a hub of excitement in the third and fourth weeks, where table tennis skills are honed with precision and finesse. However, the exploration doesn't stop there. The vast expanse of the oval and Ford Reserve becomes the canvas for introducing students to lifelong sports. From the precision of golf to the focus required for archery and the camaraderie fostered through bocce, Year 9 students get a taste of sports that transcend time. The outdoor adventure continues with SEPEP, ensuring a holistic and engaging physical education experience throughout the semester.

The carefully crafted scope and sequence outlined in the Victorian Curriculum form the backbone of this progressive journey, ensuring that each student receives a well-rounded and enriching HPE experience. The emphasis on outdoor activities, team sports, and lifelong pursuits not only contributes to physical well-being but also nurtures essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and resilience.

As the academic year unfolds, the corridors and outdoor spaces of GSSC resonate with the sounds of camaraderie, the thrill of competition, and the joy of discovering new facets of physical education. The HPE program at GGSC is not just a curriculum; it's a dynamic expedition fostering a love for movement, health, and the joy of being active for life.

Welcome to Aimee Sidebottom:

Aimee Sidebottom has recently joined the Health PE Domain at GSSC. Her role focuses on managing the Strength and Conditioning Centre in an ES position on staff. With qualifications and experience as a group fitness instructor, Aimee is actively working on documentation, inductions, and pre-screening procedures to ensure the safe and constructive use of the centre by Year 9 Fitness, Year 10 Human Movement and Sport Science, and Year 11 and 12 PE classes. This marks a significant step towards fostering a positive culture in the Strength and Conditioning Area and the commencement of maximising the use of this amazing facility.

Funding Updates and Active Schools Program:

In the coming weeks, GSSC is set to acquit most of the funding received from the Active Schools Program in 2023. This funding has been invested in new indoor badminton posts, rackets, shuttles, and additional equipment for the Strength and Conditioning Centre. Elisha Fiddes, the Director of Sport, has been instrumental in submitting further funding applications for the 2024 round. The outcomes of these applications are eagerly awaited as GSSC continues to enhance its sports and fitness facilities.

Students and staff alike are poised for success, and the future holds exciting possibilities for the intersection of health, physical education, and well-being at Greater Shepparton Secondary College.
