An overview of learning in each PLC presented to Governing Council in week 3

Early Years PLC

Foundation and year one students have been exploring chance and data in mathematics this term. It has been great to see students having a go at collecting, displaying and analysing data. In writing, students have enjoyed discovering what information texts are and students are starting to learn about different types of marsupials. 13 Block students have loved the opportunity to play in the nature play this term, so much so we even designed and created our very own nature play models, using both natural and built features. 

 

Year 1 and 2 students have been exploring the structure of information texts and will soon be creating an information report on a chosen animal. As part of our IBL this term, students have been working with Mrs Howard to explore our place in space and engaged with a variety of hands-on activities learning about our solar system. We are also busy preparing for our Family Fun Night stalls which we are all very excited about.

Primary Years PLC

So far this term, we have been looking at algebra and money in maths. We have been continuing with our timeless narratives in year 3 and are now moving on to poetry, looking at rhyme, rhythm, structure, verses and sentences. 

 

In health in 301 & 302, we are looking into healthy foods and choices that we are making regarding being healthy. In 301 and 302 we have been learning about celebrations and commemorations in media arts. The students have been utilised their computer skills and cropped a picture of them into a celebration or commemoration of their choice.

Middle Years PLC

This term the middle years have been busy with their English units of work and maths. The year 6 students went on an excursion to Parliament House, Government House and Centre of Democracy. The Year 5’s went on an excursion to the Tea Tree Gully Council and Library and met with Mayor Ryan. The middle years are busily getting ready for Family Fun Night and graduation. The Year 6’s are looking forward to the upcoming aquatics day.

Performing Arts

F-2 students will be learning the role of Music in Celebrations. Students will explore cultural celebrations dancing and singing to music and reinforce their understanding of elements of music, time, pitch, expression, musical structure and timbre. Students will sing and play percussion instruments with accurate pitch, beat, rhythm and expression.

 

Students will be learning about the role of Music in Telling Stories. Students will be learning that music with or without words will tell a story to an audience and evoke an emotional response. Students will explore how musical rap artists create stories with words and communicate mood and meaning. Students will perform the stories to the class audience. 

 

3-4 students will be learning the role of Music in Celebrations. Students will explore cultural celebrations moving in time to music and reinforce their understanding of elements of music, time, pitch, expression and musical structure and timbre. Students will sing and play percussion instruments with accurate pitch, beat, rhythm and expression. Students will learn celebration chants, celebrate with percussion instruments and celebrate rhythms to understand the difference between the beat and the rhythm. Students will be learning about the role of Music in Telling Stories. Students will be learning that music with or without words will tell a story to an audience and evoke an emotional response. Students will explore how rap music can tell a story and create a mood. Students will explore how musical rap artists create stories with words and communicate mood and meaning. Students will create and perform their own stories and music in small groups. 

 

5-6 students will be learning to create music and listen to music in “Rhythmic Riot”. The concept of ostinato is a rhythmic pattern that is repeated in a piece of music, and students will be learning to understand musical elements, beat and rhythm to create ostinato patterns. Students will use rhythm to explore, rehearse and perform music in class. Students will chant and play music with movement and percussion instruments to perform ostinatos. Students will create music compositions and play music by exploring ostinatos and rhythmic patterns and different ways to combine beats. Students will be learning about Rap songs and Rap music artists in “Snappin’ Rappin”. Students will learn about the history and characteristics of Rap music. Students will write, practise and perform a Rap song in small groups to their peers with movement and percussion instruments. Students will practise rhymes with music and compose, rehearse and perform a Rap song to a class audience in small groups.

Japanese

This term we have continued learning Hiragana. Early years students have been practising some colour words that link into the hiragana we have been focussing on and they have really enjoyed this. 

 

The year 3-6 students have been keen to improve their recognition of hiragana which has shown some amazing success. 

 

Four year 5/6 students attended the state hiragana competition in week 3. We came 7th in the state which was great and the students had an amazing experience.

Science

Foundation and year 1 students have been learning how to identify daily and seasonal changes using observations and scientific information. 

 

Year 2 students have been learning about the Earth and Sun and how to describe patterns they observe in the sky (sunrise-sunset). 

 

Year 3 students have been learning about the Earth, Sun and Moon, and are generating an understanding of the Earth’s movement to explain everyday observations (day and night). 

 

Year 4 students have been learning about weathering, the processes that cause change to the Earth’s surface and generating understanding through a variety of hands-on investigations. 

 

Year 5 and 6 students have been learning about the key features of our solar system, looking closely at each of the 8 planets in our solar system.

Physical Education

Junior primary students have been focusing on game skills playing modified minor games. Primary students have been practising striking skills in modified pickleball games.

IBL

Year 5/6 classes have been developing their computational thinking skills with microbits which are tiny circuit boards designed to help students learn to code and create with technology. 

 

Year 1/2 classes have been investigating the features of the planets in our solar system.
