Under 14's Cricket Team - Friday, November 24th

The U14 GIHS team took on Farrer in the next round of the statewide knockout today. The boys set off at 7 am with high ambitions and cloudy skies for Tamworth. Glen lost the toss and Farrer chose to bat. Their decision was vindicated when they went to drinks at 0 for 77 and the Glen boys needed some wickets. Unfortunately, the drinks break didn’t trigger a collapse and Farrer made it to the 26th over before the first wicket fell on 91. The second opener fell for 55 in the 32nd over. Some big hitting in the end saw Farrer finish on 4 for 223. A decent target but achievable if the GIHS boys' top order batted well. The wicket takers were Leo Eastwood finishing with 2 for 42. Harry Bailey 1 for 17 and Brad Hoskins 1 for 20.

After a quick lunch out strode our captain Leo Eastwood with Harry Bailey to show the Farrer boys what they could do. Unfortunately, that bravado was gone in the second over with Leo out for 2. Jackson Jarret showed a bit of ticker with Harry to stay around until the 6th over before he was gone for 2. Our next great hope Rocco came and went for a golden duck, out lbw, and M. Forwood for Farrer was on a hatrick. He didn’t get it but soon after Harry was bowled for 8 and our top order was in tatters. The dismal showing continued with a series of ducks and single-digit scores seeing Glen a very disappointing 8:67 after 22 overs when the rain came and stopped play. M. Forwood the big destroyer with 5 for 7 and his swing and pace creating problems. With Glen in a big hole, the game was called off and Farrer declared winners with no need to call in Duckworth Lewis to work out who won.

The lads were disappointed with the result. The effort was there however they didn’t put their best foot forward today. It happens. Despite being on the end of the hammering the boys were supportive of one another, cheering and having a good time representing the school and absorbing the tough lessons in life that sport deals out. Their sportsmanship and camaraderie was great. Thanks to Mr Taylor and Mrs Rossington for taking the team and for the Subway stop on the way home.

Under 14's Cricket Team - Friday, November 10th

The GIHS U14 cricket team played the second round of their state competition against Inverell at a wet Lynch Oval on Friday. Glen lost the toss and was sent in by Preston Leonard of Inverell. With a wet wicket, the ball skidded on but Glen openers Leo Eastwood and Harrison Bailey put on 54 before the first wicket fell. With Harrison out for 27. A flurry of wickets fell in the ensuing couple of overs due to some poor shots and not watching the ball close enough to see Glen slip to 5 for 61 after only 12 overs, including the other scoring mainstay Leo, back in the pavilion for 24. All 5 wickets going to Preston Leonard who finished his spell with 5/30. With 28 overs still to play GIHS needed someone to put their head down and make sure they batted out the overs. Small in stature but big in heart, up stepped, Pat Wright. He carried his bat through the rest of the innings to the 38th over building partnerships with each batsman that came out. Slowly GIHS built their innings with significant contributions from Aiden and Dustin McBain and the wide column. GIHS were eventually all out for 144 with Pat unbeaten on 24.

Feeling confident that they had enough the GIHS boys got off to a great start with Harry Bailey on a hat trick in the second over. Inverell 2 down for 1 run. Leo chimed in with another wicket before Harrison got another. Pat Wright then bagged one with his second ball and Inverell was 5 for 13 in the 9th over and needed a resurrection of Glen Maxwell proportions to get near the Glen score. Toby Frendon squashed any thought of that with a great slip catch along with excellent catching from the team. Seven wickets fell to catches with not one dropped catch. Harrison went looking for a second hat trick while Pat and Loyd Newbery mopped up the tail to have Inverell all out for 16 runs in the 12th over. GIHS won by 128 runs. Harrison finished with the amazing figures of 5/5, Pat 2/4, Lloyd 2/0, and Leo 1/6.

A strong performance which now sees our Glen boys take on the sterner competition in Farrer in the 3rd round. Congratulations to the boys for their teamwork.
