Getting a Headstart on Resources, Reading and Research

Our Learning and Discovery Centers (libraries) are feeling a definite invigorated vibe as ourstudents, staff and teachers prepare the groundwork for 2024 during Headstart.  Our LDC’s give enormous support to ensure our college community has the most effective resources to optimise the students’ chances of success in their studies.

RESOURCES - BOOK HIRE

As we are now in the 2024 academic year, it is a timely reminder for all students and families to return all texts from 2023 to the LDC (Cranbourne) and the CO1 room in Clyde North to ensure all students receive the texts they need now and especially over the summer period.  Our Bookhire staff led by Ms Rowland at Cranbourne campus and assisted at Clyde North campus by Ms Trainor work tirelessly to deliver texts in excellent order and on time to all students. However it takes all cogs - in-the-wheel to keep the bookhire system turning with effectiveness and timeliness, so your help in returning all 2023 textbooks is essential.

SUMMER READING

Students and staff at St. Peter’s are able to borrow from the LDC’s for their summer reading pleasure. All borrowing due dates will default to early in February 2024. All students, staff and teachers are encouraged to browse in the libraries so they will not miss out on their relaxing reads over the summer break. Please see our wonderful staff at both campuses to suggest agood read. Our Principal Mr Black encourages us to understand that ‘Reading Matters’, as well as encouraging “reading as a wonderful pastime, that takes you to another place and that’s really important in this day and age’ (2021).

RESOURCES FOR STUDY & RESEARCH

At St. Peter’s College we provide curated physical and online resources including academic databases for students, however we provide only a handful of the resources that are available through our State Library of Victoria (SLV). The SLV provides all students and any citizen of Victoria with free membership. Joining the State Library of Victoria (SLV) gives access to a wealth of resources and services.  Our Learning and Teaching leaders at St. Peter strongly encourage ALL students to become FREE members of the SLV over the summer break and EXPLORE the learning opportunities- and get the jump on 2024.

Here are some of the benefits for students:

Preparation for Research. Students can access all resources both physically at the SLV or online. The SLV gives comprehensive assistance and guidance on how best to access the resources and information from their site.

Free access to vast resources. Students can access extensive collections of books, journals, magazines and newspapers, as well as a wide range of academic and research materials for projects and assignments.

Online Resources. The library offers digital resources, e-books, databases and online journals as well as digitised primary resources for deep research.

Access to Historical and Cultural materials.  The SLV houses significant historical and cultural materials, perfect for students interested in history, culture and the arts.

Assistance. On site librarians as well as online librarians are available for assistance.  The SLV also offers onsite and online webinars and workshops for students.

Community opportunities. Students can meet like-minded people, attend book clubs or participate in discussions or events.
