Helpful advice for Year 6 Students and their Parents

Nurturing Success in Secondary School

As the school year draws to conclusion and orientation day has taken place for those beginning their Secondary School journey, the following tips may be helpful for parents and caregivers as they support their new secondary schooler as they enter this next exciting chapter at MECS.

Communication is Key

Effective communication with school lays the foundation for a successful first year in secondary school. Familiarise yourself with teachers, coordinators, and especially the Pastoral Care and Homeroom teachers. Proactively share any specific learning or behavioural concerns, fostering a collaborative approach. Early communication about concerns is crucial, allowing teachers to address issues before they escalate.

While managing school communication can be overwhelming, staying informed about important dates and events is essential. Regularly check school information via Compass, noting term dates, sports events, excursions, and camps. Actively engaging with provided information ensures you stay connected with your teenager's school life.

Organisation leads to Success

Instilling organisational skills in a secondary schooler is key. Create a visible family calendar featuring important dates and events. Establish a designated space at home for school communication, such as a folder or notice tray. Ensure your child utilises the management system on their personal learning device (School Box) - consistently recording homework, assessments, and tests. Regularly check in with Compass to track work requirements your child has and address any gaps in tasks being left incomplete.

Create a supportive homework plan

Developing a structured homework plan contributes to success. Set up a well-lit homework space with necessary tools, minimising distractions like social media. Encourage your teen to create a 'To-Do' list, fostering a sense of accomplishment. Providing a supportive environment for homework enhances their focus and productivity.

Help your Secondary Schooler nurture their Spark!

Beyond academics, encourage your teen to find their passion or 'spark.' In the book of James 1:17 we are encouraged to see these as gifts from God. All our students have different talents and God-given gifts and nurturing these promotes resilience, wellbeing, and provides a balance to the demands of the school year.

Prepare for a successful day ahead

Preparing for a successful day involves ensuring your secondary student has a nutritious breakfast, a balanced lunch, and healthy snacks. Adequate sleep is crucial, with many teens experiencing sleep issues. Implementing boundaries, such as removing electronic devices from bedrooms, helps establish a healthy sleep routine. If sleep problems persist, seeking advice from a healthcare professional is advisable.

Maintaining open communication with your child during their secondary school years is vital. Despite potential reluctance, consistently inquire about their school day. Find opportune moments, such as car rides or café dates, to foster conversations. Emphasise listening over fixing, as many adolescents simply need someone to hear them. Share positive high school experiences to reassure your teen that this phase is temporary.

By actively participating in your teenager's academic journey, you play a crucial role in their overall well-being and success.
