Library News

Welcome to Term 2, I hope you had a relaxing break and are looking forward to the term ahead. We have a busy term in the library, starting with reading some special Anzac stories this week and then moving on to a variety of activities based on non-fiction.

This Week's Reads

Each year I’m always amazed at how students engage with Anzac stories; this year is no different. Kindergarteners enjoyed reading ‘Anzac Ted’ by Belinda Landsberry and sharing stories about the special things that remind them of home and their families.

Stage 1 is learning about Christmas care packages sent to soldiers in World War I in ‘The Anzac Billy’ by Claire Saxby and drawing what they would put in a billy can.

Stage 2 is hearing of the incredible bravery of one of Broome’s most revered war heroes. ‘Charlie’s Swim’ by Edith Wright, tells the true story of Bardi man Charlie D’Antoine and his courageous rescue of a Dutch woman and her child during the Japanese attack on the morning of March 3, 1942.

Lastly, Stage 3 students are delving into the book inspired by the renowned Australian song "I Was Only Nineteen" by Redgum. They're exploring themes surrounding the Vietnam War, conscription, and the subsequent arrival of refugees in Australia seeking freedom. Were you aware that this song has been ranked among the Top 30 Australian songs of all time? It's a powerful story.

If you’re interested in listening to these and other Anzac stories, don’t forget to visit Storybox Library and enjoy their great Anzac collection. Go to the website here, log in using username: htsinverell, password: Inverell2360. Once logged in, scroll down the home page to the Anzac collection.

National Simultaneous Storytime 2024 - Coming Soon!

Once again, our school is participating in the annual National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. This year’s story, ‘Bowerbird Blues’’ by Aura Parker will be read simultaneously on Wednesday, 22nd May at noon.
