Throwing and Catching in PE

Over the last few weeks in PE our Year One and Year Two students have been using their hand eye coordination and fundamental motor skills to revise the steps of throwing and catching.

We have focused on three different throws: overarm throw, underarm throw and a chest pass. Each throw has different steps involved in making sure the process is carried out correctly and the students have done a wonderful job trying to remember them.

The three basic steps involved in all throws are:

  1. Eyes focused on the target
  2. Step towards the target with your opposite foot to your throwing arm
  3. Arm bent at elbow for an overarm throw or arm swings up from hip for an underarm throw

We have used a range of different objects to practise throwing and catching, making sure when we catch we use our ‘Spiderman hands’ for a catch below our head or ‘letter w hands’ for a catch above our head.

The students have enjoyed using these throwing and catching skills in minor games and PMP.
