Learning In My Level

A celebration of what's happening across the school!

Level 5/6 News

Level 5

Level 5 students have hit the ground running, if not a sprint this term. There have been many exciting things happening where all of the students have participated with the aim of giving their absolute best. Some highlights to name a few include; Cross Country, Athletics Carnival, Rock Band performances and Maths Olympiad.

Reading

This term, the students have begun participating in their first Literacy Circle. The excitement and anticipation that developed from the ‘Book Tasting’ that took place late last term, has continued this term. All of the classroom teachers have been thoroughly impressed with the accountability each student has shown each week to complete their role, allowing for rich and engaging student led discussions about each text.

Mathematics

The four operations, the importance of estimating and solving worded problems has been the focus this term. The students have been exposed to new multiplicative strategies, including the lattice and area methods, and long division. The students have risen to the challenge of showing their working out and finding their answers in multiple ways. Utilising a variety of strategies has helped develop students’ conceptual understanding and ability to articulate their reasoning when problem solving.

Level 6

We are embarking on another exciting term of learning.

In Literacy, our focus has been on narratives, complemented by the introduction of literacy circles. Students have enthusiastically engaged in discussions centered around their chosen books, delving into themes, symbolism, and historical and cultural contexts.

In Mathematics, our attention has been directed towards the concepts of time and angles. Students have demonstrated dedication in building their understanding of complementary and supplementary angles, as well as mastering the calculation of elapsed time. Students located different angles around the school as pictured below.

This term, our Inquiry topic revolves around sustainability, an important subject in today's world. We are excited to showcase our exploration of this topic during our upcoming open afternoon visit.

As always, we have a strong focus on wellbeing. As part of the resilience project we place a strong emphasis on empathy and have been writing letters to a school in Cambodia where Josh Godwin worked during the Easter holidays. These letters have been written to assist the Cambodian students in learning English.  We are also very excited to be trialling the Embrace program which we believe will further enhance our efforts in promoting wellbeing within the school community.

We look forward to sharing the progress and achievements of our students with you.
