News from 5/6

In Maths, students are finishing off their dream bedroom 3D models. They have put so much effort into their designs, showing creativity and resilience when gluing their 3D nets together! We also incorporated our inquiry topic into some maths sessions by looking at maps of other countries and exploring humans' relationship with the world by creating graphs from information about the level of pollution in our ocean. Our main area of focus over the coming weeks will be on fractions, decimals and percentages.

In English, students are enjoying 47 Degrees, a fictional book based on Black Saturday. Students are answering comprehension questions, summarising chapters and looking at descriptive and visual language. Students have also been researching information on different countries for their Inquiry unit.

We are all looking forward to our first interschool sport match against Croydon Primary School this Friday (10/05). Students will be departing school just after 9am and returning before recess. A BIG thank you to Elisa, Robyn, Erin, Simone and Paul for volunteering their time to help during training sessions and games.

What's happening in 3/4

What an eventful start to the term we have had! Thank you to all of our families for supporting the 3/4 students in being prepared for swimming the last week. It helped make the week run smoothly. We are so proud of all of the students efforts in the swimming program, and how we saw their growth mindset extend beyond the classroom to the pool (and slide)!

We have continued to immerse ourselves in texts such as Welcome to Country, Birrung the Secret Friend and a range of convict biographies to build our historical knowledge for our inquiry unit on Australian history. Students have been supporting their information collecting skills by using the 'who, where, when, how' strategy to summarise their texts.

During our Multiplication unit, students have been building their times table and number fluency through daily practice. They have worked hard to develop their skills in solving vertical multiplication equations, building on their knowledge of place value in the process. As we draw to the end of multiplication, we have begun introducing our division unit this week also.

We are enjoying learning about Australia's rich history, focusing on the way of life for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders before European Settlement, the explorers who visited Australia during the Age of Exploration and the journey of the First Fleet. We are beginning to look at the nature and impact of the first contact between early colonists and the Eora people of Sydney.

Adventures of 1/2

We had an adventurous week at swimming and we learnt lots of important skills about water safety! Thank you to the parent helpers that came along.

In English, we have been delving deep into our non fiction topic. We are learning about the different features non fiction books have and where we can find them in different books. The students have developed great skills in navigating the index, glossary and contents page.

We have been connecting this with our inquiry topic about our place in the world, as we are reading books about different parts of Australia and important facts about our landmarks. The students have been engaging in learning about different places in our country and learning about our place in our country.

In Maths, the 1/2s have been developing skills around place value and partitioning. The students loved creating their place value houses to partition numbers. We have also been practicing skip counting in our warm up games, as we are learning about doubling a number. We are practicing doubling numbers through hands on activities which the students are enjoying.

We are looking forward to seeing you at our open night on Wednesday the 15th May! There will be lots of fun STEAM activities to explore.

Fantastic Foundation

Well done to our Foundation students who have had an awesome start to the term and demonstrated our school values at our Swimming Program last week. Thank you to those volunteers who helped at swimming and to all of our families for helping their child in preparing and understanding the expectations.

In literacy, we have been learning about our first diagraph /ck/ two letter k and its sound. These next few weeks we are focussing on segmenting and blending words and practising this skill in class. In English, we are have been practising being brave writers and writing about our swimming. In the coming weeks we will be learning about asking questions about what we are reading and writing about things we have learnt from non-fiction texts.

Our Inquiry unit is well under way and this week we are learning about places that are special to people. In the coming weeks we will shift our focus onto Community Helpers in the lead up to our Fire Rescue Victoria Incursion.

Foundation students have started this week exploring how numbers can be odd or even through fun games and hands on materials. We are continuing to revise our number recognition and counting skills during these activities.

News from the Art Room

Gorgeous mixed-media poppies created by Grades 3/4s to commemorate Anzac Day. Students painted the negative space and then cut up a variety of fabrics to layer their poppies.
