Dear Families

As we strive to be ‘people for others’, we seek opportunities to make a positive impact on our local and broader communities, with the Year 12 Student Representative Council leading initiatives to raise awareness in support of the World’s Greatest Shave and the Push-Up Challenge this term.

The World’s Greatest Shave is one of Australia’s favourite charities offering life-changing support, leading-edge research and campaigning for change for over 25 years in the treatment and hopeful cure for blood cancer. Yesterday, more than 50 Year 12 students cut and shaved their hair as an act of support for those battling leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Fundraising amongst their own friends and families, the team have raised over $17,000 to go to the Leukaemia Foundation, and the hair cut will go towards creating wigs whilst the shorter clippings will be transformed into compost and floating hair booms to absorb oil spills.

The link between physical and mental health is strong, as is feeling connected to the people around us. The Push-Up Challenge is an initiative that, over the past six years, has become the largest mental health and fitness event in Australia, bringing people in workplaces and schools together for a common cause. Conducted from 5 to 28 June, participants around Australia are challenged to complete 3,249 push-ups, squats, lunges or other exercises as a spotlight on the number of lives lost to suicide in 2022.  Led by Wellbeing Captains and Push-Up Challenge Student Ambassadors Esther and Maya, the Year 12 Student Representative Council has been promoting the Push-Up Challenge and organising Homeroom challenges. Whilst only into the second week of the challenge, our collective effort has been 18,489 push-ups and $1,500 funds raised to date.

Under WA and Education Push-Up Challenge Leaderboard, the College is ranked fourth in push-ups banked and ranked ninth in funds raised.

Congratulations to the Student Representative Council for leading these initiatives and to all students participating in these worthy campaigns.

Well done to all Years 11 and 12 performers who participated in Tuesday’s Senior House Theatre Sports competition, entertaining the audience with their comedic talent, and all the best to our musicians who embarked on Music Camp today to Fairbridge Farm. A highlight of the Music calendar, we hope that everyone enjoys the weekend. Wishing Year 10 Outdoor Education students an enjoyable and rewarding camp next week in the great outdoors.

NAS Winter Carnival: Tuesday 18 June

The Year 8 NAS Winter Carnival is on Tuesday with all students participating in a carnival in either a NAS Team, Lightening Carnival Team or as a student helper supporting at team. This is a compulsory school day for students, and we wish everyone a fantastic day.

Winter Uniform Reminder

The College uniform provides students with a sense of identity and belonging and should be worn correctly and with pride as a member of our community. A reminder that students are required to wear their blazers to and from school each day and that students wearing trousers and the classic shirt are required to have the shirt tucked in. Students wearing earrings are permitted to wear one pair of simple gold or silver studs or sleepers. Students wearing incorrect uniform will receive a uniform infringement and will have jewellery confiscated.

eRideables: Keeping Safe

eScooters and other electric rideable devices are becoming increasingly popular among young people. For students who ride their eScooters to and from school, please be reminded of the current laws regarding their use:

It has been reported that some students have been riding their eScooter in excess of the speed limit, placing them and others in danger. Please take the time to discuss the importance of road and footpath safety with your child if they own an eScooter. More information can be found at eRideables (www.wa.gov.au)

Using SmartRiders

We have received reports that not all students catching Transperth buses are tagging on and off with their SmartRiders as they should be. Transportation is free for students, but they are still required to use their SmartRiders correctly.

Heritage Lane Car Park

Families are reminded to be courteous and considerate of our neighbours and student safety when driving and parking at the College. We have numerous car parks across the campus designated to ensure the safety of the community and help with traffic flow.

The recent installation of a boom gate at the Heritage Lane car park ensures that this parking area is available for staff use only and mitigates some of the previous safety concerns that have been raised. Please do not use this area as a drop-off zone or park in front of the boom gate, as this obstructs staff access to the car park, potentially creating more safety concerns. We appreciate your efforts in adhering to the guidelines, which can be found on the School Traffic Management and Parking Guidelines page of the newsletter.

Our coaches have commented on the excitement and willingness to learn and improve. There are still two weeks of training left before the term ends. Please see the full schedule attached.

Eagles School Boys Cup

Well done to all our students who have been competing in the Years 8/9 Eagles School Boys Australian Rules Football competition. It all came down to the grand final last Thursday against Newman. The boys were just pipped at the post but are to be commended on all their efforts. Big thanks to Coach Mr Bill Quartermaine for all his time and effort with the boys this season. We look forward to seeing them in action again next year!

ACC Hockey Challenge

On Monday 11 June we had a team of students participate in the ACC Hockey Challenge. Well done to the girls on a great effort. The girls won three of their games and narrowly missed out on a place in the grand final match in a sudden death penalty shootout. The team finished third overall. Coach Miss Jodi Power said the girls played with great spirit and showcased a high level of skill throughout the day. Well done JTC!

Congratulations

A big congratulations to Georgia Farnan (Year 10) and her horse Misty on receiving their RDA National Dressage Competition award. Georgia placed third in her division at the national event. Well done, Georgia!

Congratulations to two of our John XXIII Cross-Country athletes, Claudia Gnech (Year 9) and Vivienne Barley (Year 7), who have both been selected in the final trials to compete at the School Sport National Cross-Country Championships in Victoria this August. It is a wonderful achievement to have been selected amongst some of the top school athletes in WA. Great work!
