Reconciliation Round:

On Saturday 25th May we acknowledged the reconciliation round in the SACSSGSA and IGSSA sport competitions and this included wearing red, black, or yellow ribbons at our sports games and also acknowledging The Traditional Owners of the Land.

National Reconciliation Week is held each year from 27 May – 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey: The successful 1967 referendum (27 May 1967) and the High Court Mabo decision (3 June 1992).

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2024, Now More Than Ever #NRW2024. It is a reminder to all of us that we have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.

Cross Country:

On Thursday 6 June several of our talented cross-country runners participated in the Cross Country State Championships.  Not only did they achieve impressive times to qualify for the State Championships, but they also performed exceptionally well under challenging conditions, with many achieving personal bests. A special congratulations to Zoe Reid, who has been invited to the next stage to try out for the state team.

Most of our winter sports continue across Term 2 and Term 3 meaning that students won’t have to re-register for next term.

However, there are a few new offerings in Term 3 that students will be able to sign up for:

  • Year 5/6 Hockey
  • Year 3/4 Basketball
  • Little Athletics – spring season (Years 3-6)

Parents will receive information regarding these programs next week and will be able to register via Clipboard.

SAPSASA Netball

Congratulations to Elsa-Marie Kefalianos, Giselle Strangar and Alyssa Reed who have been selected to represent East Adelaide in the SAPSASA District Netball Carnival. The carnival will be held at the Netball SA Stadium from June 19-21.

State Cross Country

Well done to Juliet Searle and Sophie d’Amato who represented East Adelaide at the State Cross Country Championships at Oakbank yesterday. Several thousand runners from all over South Australia descended on the Oakbank Racecourse to take on a challenging 3km course. Juliet and Sophie performed brilliantly recording impressive times.

Student Achievement

Well done to Lucy Diestel-Feddersen who competed recently at the Fierce Talent Competition.

Lucy finished in 3rd place for Jazz, was the runner-up Champion Dancer for Hip Hop and finished in 1st place in Musical Theatre. Lucy achieved the second highest overall score for her age group across all genres in the Fierce Title Champion award.

WORLDIE (n, adj)

“Usually reserved for the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and Kerr, a worldie is when someone scores a goal from a long distance that creates pandemonium in the stadium.”

Last Friday afternoon our undefeated Year 3 Blue and Year 3/4 Gold soccer teams were matched against each other at Loreto. They fought out a high-standard, gripping encounter in drizzling rain. Scores were tied 2-2 with only seconds left when the Blue team won a free kick just outside the box. With the last kick of the game, up stepped set-piece specialist, Isabella Mignone. Facing a crowded penalty area, Isabella wound up and fired an absolute rocket into the top-left corner.

Winners 3-2! Pandemonium indeed.

The heavens opened soon after. After a quick photo, everyone bolted to the cars to dry off and raced to Adelaide Oval to watch the Matildas.

Performing Arts

Jessie Lloyd

As part of National Reconciliation Week activities, we were fortunate to host musician, producer and a creative entrepreneur, Jessie Lloyd for the whole day. Originally from the beautiful tropics of North Queensland, Jessie is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artist and is a cultural practitioner of Indigenous music. She is dedicated to the continuation of song traditions and cultural practice through the production of both traditional and contemporary Indigenous music.During Jessie’s visit, she presented multiple workshops and performances throughout the day to our students. Importantly, students were given the opportunity to engage in conversations with Jessie. These conversations ranged from personal stories of family history and culture through to gaining insights about being a musician and artist as a career. Jessie is creating a songbook of indigenous music to share with schools so that indigenous music and indigenous culture can gain better representation in educational settings. The girls absolutely enjoyed Jessie’s visit as a highlight for Reconciliation Week. Special thanks to Tim de Jong for organising this memorable experience!

Adelaide Vocal Eisteddfods

Three of our students competed at the annual Adelaide Vocal Eisteddfods last week. The Adelaide Eisteddfod provides valuable opportunities for students to gain performing experience through competitions held from May to September each year.

Molly Silvy competed in two divisions: 17 years and under Contemporary Solo and 17 years and under Jazz/Blues/Gospel Solo. She sang beautifully and achieved first place in both division entries. Congratulations Molly!

Coincidentally, the prize money for both of the divisions were sponsored by Loreto Old Scholars, Deanna Carbone and Celeste La Scala (née Carbone) of voicehouse.com.au

In addition to winning first place in 15 Years and Under Any Voice Solo, Mia Luppino took 3rd in 15 Years and Under LOTE Solo (Language Other Than English) and 3rd in 15 Years and Under Contemporary Solo. Gracie Cheung took 1st place in 15 Years and Under Musical Theatre Solo and the Honourable Mention in 15 Years and Under Contemporary Solo. Well done Mia and Gracie!

Year 5 Musical - Peter Pan Jr

The corridors of our Junior School are buzzing with excitement as the Year 5 students dive into rehearsals in the Performing Arts Centre, for our much-anticipated production of Peter Pan Jr. Set to take the stage at the end of June, this classic tale of adventure and imagination is brought to life by our talented young performers.

Rehearsals kicked off in term 1 with an energetic read-through, where the cast got their first taste of the magical journey to Neverland. From Peter Pan’s daring escapades to Captain Hook’s comical villainy, the enthusiasm was palpable as students embodied their characters with gusto.

Throughout the rehearsal process, students are learning not just their lines and songs but also the importance of teamwork and dedication. Each rehearsal is a blend of acting, singing, and dancing, as well as an opportunity for students to build confidence and creativity.

In the weeks ahead, our rehearsals will intensify as we move from script reading to full run-throughs. The energy is infectious, and the commitment of our students is truly inspiring. We can't wait to share this enchanting performance with our school community.

Mark your calendars for the big day and join us in celebrating the hard work and talent of our young stars. Get ready to fly away to Neverland with Peter Pan Jr!
