Principal's Message

Principal's Message – Week 1  Term 3

Welcome back everyone!

I trust you all had a restful and enjoyable holiday. Many families took the opportunity to travel, whether overseas or interstate, spending precious time with family and friends while following the sun. I hope you enjoyed these moments and that your children have returned to school refreshed and ready for the challenges of term three.

This week, we have the pleasure of welcoming many new families to our school. Nine children are joining us in Prep, Year 1, Year 2, Year 4, and Year 5. Additionally, we extend a warm welcome to our 15 international students from China, who will be learning with us during the first half of this term, across every year level from Prep to Year 6.

At the start of every term at St Columba’s, we celebrate Wellbeing Week, and this week is no exception. As we commence this second semester, it is vital that our children feel connected and happy—an essential ingredient for learning at their best. Wellbeing underpins everything we do; it is the linchpin that brings about success at school.

Research has consistently shown that a strong sense of belonging at school significantly impacts a child's mental health and academic success. According to a study highlighted in Teacher Magazine's Research Files Episode 91, students who feel a sense of belonging at school tend to have better mental health outcomes in the long term. This sense of belonging fosters a supportive environment where children feel valued, respected, and connected to their peers and teachers.

Furthermore, the research indicates that when students feel they belong, they are more likely to engage positively with their learning environment, exhibit higher levels of motivation, and achieve better academic results. This positive school experience is crucial as it not only enhances academic performance but also builds resilience and coping skills that benefit children throughout their lives.

At St Columba’s, we are committed to fostering this sense of belonging. During Wellbeing Week, we have been engaging in various activities designed to strengthen connections among students and between students and staff. These activities aim to create an inclusive and supportive school community where every child feels they are a valued member.

By prioritizing wellbeing and a sense of belonging, we are laying the foundation for a positive and productive school experience for all our students. Let’s continue to work together to ensure that every child feels connected, supported, and ready to learn.
