Whats Happening In Grade 6

Welcome back to Term 3!

Literacy

This term the students will be learning about the structure of information texts and researching scientists whose inventions or discoveries changed the world such as Marie Curie and Jonas Salk.  From this research, the students will compose information reports with topic sentences, subheadings and visual literacy.  Novel studies will continue for the literature component of the reading program. We are reading “Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH” by Robert C O’Brien, an award -winning novel which explores the themes of courage and perseverance.

Students will  also be exploring explanation texts.  Students will learn about the structure and purpose of explanation texts. They will read about how things work.   Students will write their own explanation texts using time connectives, causal language, conjunctions and complex sentences.

Numeracy

The Grade 6 students will begin working on LAF (Learning and Assessment Framework) activities which aim to support multiplicative thinking. Alongside the activities in LAF, students will be discovering the properties of 3D objects using nets, discovering the formula for area and solving perimeter problems.  Students will also be rolling the dice and conducting chance experiments and will use the probability scale to determine the probability of events occurring.

Future Focused Learning (FFL) This term our Inquiry topic is Physical and Chemical Science.  Students will conduct experiments and write scientific reports to document their experiments.  An incursion by Supreme Incursions on physical science will consolidate the student’s learning.

We are extremely proud of our Grade 6 students who continue to model our four school values, Respect, Resilience, Teamwork and Learning.
