The rise and rise of hockey at St George's

In 2023, Benjamin Humphreys and Rory Bingham came into the PE office to ask if we could compete in ACC Hockey. I told them to gather names of hockey players and let’s go for it.  Meantime, Emily Muir’s mum also raised the idea . . . and so our Dragons Hockey Team was born.

Sadly, last year, the boys did not get their wish because the competition was full. But this year the ACC opened up a Boys Division 3 – so we were in. And – to cap it off - we also fielded a Girls team.

Under Ben’s tenacious lead for the Boys, the Dragons cut through the competition at Aldersbury Reserve undefeated all day - until Corpus snatched the grand final win. We loved the passion displayed by Quinn Macpherson and the sportsmanship shown by Fred Keane and Nate Keady-Parry, who earlier in the day graciously played goalie for a team that was down on players. Well played!  “Sport in the right spirit”. So proud.

Mr Cotterell did an amazing job coaching the Girls team which was assigned a tough pool. We began well in the first game but eventually lost 5–1 and in the second game played our hearts out but lost 2-1. Then we celebrated our first win, 3-0! Congratulations on a superb performance and a shout-out to Cassia Douglas who played goalie for first two games and Holly Williams and Maya Hardley who helped manage positions and rotations. Hockey is truly an inclusive sport and something we will continue to grow in PE.

One Day NWAS Carnivals

Another day, another NWAS Carnival. On Tuesday, our Year 7 and 8s competed in a myriad of events,  followed on Wednesday by our Year 9s. Departing early from school on both days, we headed to Warwick Leisure Centre for netball, Kingsway Sports Complex for badminton, Britannia Reserve and Mercy College for soccer, and Britannia Reserve for touch rugby. Well done and thank you to everyone involved. Here are some highlights:

Athletics is next - keep on your toes!

In recent weeks our PE lessons have been dedicated to athletics ahead of our Interhouse Athletics Carnival at the State Athletics Centre in Week 2 of Term Three. We’re excited for the new venue and to see how far our students have come along in track and field. Keep fighting fit over the holidays and see you next term!
