From The Team

We’ve reached the end of Week 10 of Term 2! It's been an incredibly busy time for our Year 5 and 6 students. Between the King’s Birthday Public Holiday, our second Winter Sport day, Wellbeing Week, and plenty of learning, the term has flown by. This week, we participated in our final Winter Sport day, and it was fantastic to see all our students displaying excellent sportsmanship.

As the term draws to a close, it’s a perfect opportunity to reflect on our students' achievements. Over the term, we covered six maths topics, learnt a number of Write2Read codes and rules, explored various informative, persuasive and imaginative texts, and focused on developing our writing skills using the 6+1 Traits of Writing. Additionally, we published two pieces of writing for our Writing Anthology folders.

What we are up to on the holidays…

Miss Whittington: I am very excited to be spending these holidays relaxing! I don’t have many plans organised just yet, but it will be my birthday! So, I will be celebrating with my friends and family. I am also looking forward to some pampering at Endota Spa!

Mrs Spelman: I’m looking forward to spending some time relaxing after a long term. I also hope to finally get myself organised and buy some hiking boots that I can test out ready for our European winter snow holiday in December!

Miss Harper: Over the holidays I will be enjoying some relaxation time after this 11 week term! I’ll be celebrating my birthday, so I’m very excited to spend some time with my family and catch up with friends, even getting away to Kyabram with my partner to disconnect!

Julie: On these holidays, I will be staying nice and warm. I already have a few lunch dates in place with friends. My son’s dog Mollie is still with us, so she will enjoy time on the couch with me watching some movies! I will also be going to watch the Bombers play.

Josh: On the holidays I’m going to catch up with some friends. I also plan on going to the movies a couple of times. Other than that, lots of relaxing and lots of video games.

Alison: I am looking forward to some time away with my husband and dog at Inverloch - one of the loveliest seaside towns in Victoria. The beach is glorious for winter walks and, while there, we will visit nearby places for trail, bush or even rainforest walks. It truly is a beautiful part of the world. Enjoy your winter break everyone!

Donna: I am heading off for a lovely winter holiday in Wye River, along the Great Ocean Road. I have rented a lovely little house overlooking the ocean. I am looking forward to a lot of relaxing! One of my sons has his Learners, so he is going to drive us to Phillip Island for fish and chips on the beach, then drive home, giving him quite a few driving hours. I hope everyone has a good break!

Sam: Lilly and I have a few little things planned during the term break. She would like to head back to the Melbourne Museum after enjoying the excursion with the buddies so much. There are a couple of movie dates planned, and an overnight stay in Kyabram to visit Victoria's newest zoo. I'm looking forward to some PJ days and sleep-ins as well. I hope everyone enjoys their break, whether it is a busy one or a quiet one.

Congratulations!

This term, one of our students, Celeste, participated in a prestigious ballet competition in Newcastle and received 1st place. Read, below, a recount of her wonderful and successful time in Newcastle, along with a special photo that has been published in a professional magazine! Congratulations, Celeste! We are all so proud of you!

My  Ballet Competition

At the start of the year, I went to Newcastle in NSW to compete in a very prestigious ballet competition called the Australian Classical Challenge. There were master classes and stage performances. All 100 competing dancers participated in a master class on day one and then danced on stage on day two. From there, some dancers got cut and some, like me, were lucky enough to not get cut. The next day, the dancers that made it to the next round participated in another master class and more dancers got cut or eliminated. Luckily, I made it to the last round, or finals.  On the very last day, we danced on stage and the judge had to award 1st place, 2nd place and an encouragement award. The judge gave out a little speech of each dancer and then announced the awards. Two boys took out the encouragement award and 2nd place. He then announced that 1st place goes to number 62. I was number 62! I went up to collect my award and the judge gave a big speech about me. It went from 100 dancers, to 15, to 1! Later on that month, a ballet magazine editor emailed and said that I would be in the next Dancetrain magazine!

Winter Sport Day 2

Soccer

On Tuesday the 18th of June, all the Year 5/6 students went to Winter Sports Day 2, which was held in different places. The first boys Soccer game started at 10.00am and finished at 10.30am. Once the boys finished, the girls ran onto the field to congratulate the boys. At 10.30am, Eliza was determined and got 3 goals in one game, which made the girls team win. We had two strikers, which did not change until the third game, and Eliza was firing with goals. A few boys kicked some goals, and had a close call, but unfortunately did not win. The girls got 3 goals in their first game and the boys lost by a few points, despite them trying their hardest and having fun with their friends. For the boys' last game, Mahi and Eliza had to fill in because there were not enough boys to play, but in the end we had a wonderful time playing on a team with our friends. We’re so proud of the effort the soccer teams put into both rounds, despite the cold weather. Now we are even more excited to play Summer Sports next term!

Netball

On Tuesday 18th June, all of the Netball teams went to Knox Regional Netball Centre and represented Scoresby at the District Winter Sport Day 2. Over the two Winter Sport days, the Girls A team won 3/8 games, and they finished 6th place in the event; the Girls B team won 0/8 games, and finished in 7th place; the Boys team won 7/7 games, and finished 1st in the whole event and were made District Champions for Netball in Boys/Mixed Teams. They are going to represent Scoresby at the Division Netball day in Term 3. During the games, all of the teams had a lot of fun playing. Some people in the boys team brought a pack of lollies and added them into a bowl to make a candy salad.

Tee Ball

Tuesday 18th June was our second day of Winter Sports. The first game of the day was great because Scoresby A team played against Scoresby B team. It didn’t matter who won or who lost as Scoresby Primary was going to win either way. We played 2 more games against other schools then we waited as they announced the placings. Scoresby A played against Bayswater West as 3rd and 4th teams. Scoresby B played against Knox Park as 7th and 8th teams. We all tried our very best, won some games and lost some games. We all enjoyed playing Tee-ball for Winter Sports, except the part when I got hit in the eye on the first day. Some of us have even started practising for Summer Sports!

Integrated Studies

In Term 2, students delved into migration and the reasons people relocate to Australia, as part of their Integrated Studies unit. To build on their understanding of migration, they watched videos about the impact of migration on Chinese immigrants during the Australian Gold Rush era. One of the learning activities involved students imagining themselves as migrants to Australia and writing postcards to their families back home, detailing their experiences. Currently, students are finalising video interviews in which they role-played interviewing a migrant family, discussing the effects of migrating to Australia.
