Year 2 Shark Talk

Mrs Alison Bofinger

Shark Expert, Mr Heighes, Visits Year Two

Year Two have been researching sea creatures as a part of their English Literature unit on Hybrid books. They have been particularly interested in the book - The Great White Shark by Claire Saxby. They were fortunate to have shark cinematographer and shark expert Mr Jono Heighes pop in to share his expertise. Mr Heighes has been swimming with Sharks since he was 9 with his uncle and aunty - Ron and Valerie Taylor. He now works in the film industry. The Year two children were so engaged in his stories and Mr Heighes was impressed by their knowledge. A few reflections of Mr Heighes visit  are attached below.

Mr Heighes Shark Talk by Will B

Amazing facts I learnt today .
The Grey Nurse Shark is the most common shark in Australia.
I learnt that Mr Heighes’ aunt is famous and has her own book. Her name is Valerie Taylor.
I wonder if Mr Heighes’ aunt is more famous than Taylor Swift?
I wonder why Mr Heighes’ aunt  has swum with sharks for 50+ years?
I wonder why Mr Heighes Aunt Valerie wrote her own book?

Today Mr Heighes came to talk to us about sharks. He is a cinematographer and he knows a lot about sharks. His favourite sea creature is the Manta Ray. His aunty is so cool. Mr Heighes has a humongous camera. It was the money of a small car. Under the water they use sign language.

Shark Diving by Luka A

Today Mr Heighes came to talk to us about sharks. He is a cinematographer. He showed us his cameras that his Uncle Ron made. He first went scuba diving with Sharks when he was 9, that's one year older than us. His uncle and aunty used to go spear fishing but they realised that they were taking the shark's food so they stopped. So they now swim with sharks. They made a movie about sharks , it was called Jaws. But they accidentally made it scary. Everyone was scared of sharks. They didn't want people to be scared so then they taught people about sharks. Mr Heighes loves sharks too and he made me feel happy and now I know most sharks don't want to eat me except dangerous ones.

Shark Man by Siena M

Today Mr Heighes came to talk to us all about sharks. He is a cinematographer. Mr Heigheses real name is Jonathan. His Aunty Valerie Taylor swims with sharks with him. He films Valerie swimming with them. Mr Heighes is Mrs Heighe's husband.

Mr Heighes said his favourite shark is the Hammerhead. I asked him a few questions one of them was ‘How many years have you been diving for?' And when did you start filming sharks? He said he started swimming with sharks when he was nine. He was a teenager when he started filming.

The other classes came in and Mr Heighes showed us 3 cameras that can go very deep in the water without breaking because it has a cover on top to protect it. He also showed us some books that his Aunty Valerie wrote.

Mr Heighes uncle Ron made a camera with plastic, metal and a camera inside, it was very  cool because it looked very hard to make. I think that the camera looks brilliant. Ron must be amazing at making things. I wish I could swim with sharks and make things.

I`m not scared of sharks anymore but I love them.
