Dear Parents and Carers,

This week I was invited to speak at De La Salle’s Principal Assembly as the keynote speaker. Addressing a hall full of “young men” I knew it needed to be something that really engaged them. I used one of the themes from the Ted Lasso series about an American football coach who ends up coaching a failing British soccer team. Despite the odds, his unwavering belief in himself and his team leads to extraordinary outcomes. I dived deeply into the theme of “Believing in yourself” using quotes, clips and examples to make the message real and relatable. See below an extract of what I shared with the De La Salle community:

Belief in oneself is a fundamental part of achieving success and happiness. Ted Lasso’s journey is a testament to the power of self-belief. He often says, "Believe," but it's not just a word; it's a mindset. It's about having confidence in your abilities, even when faced with challenges or when others doubt you.  Self-belief doesn't mean you won't make mistakes or face setbacks, but it means you trust yourself to handle them and learn from them.

We know that sadness is a part of life. We all face tough times, challenges that test our spirit. But there's a secret weapon we all have: each other. The real tragedy isn't feeling sad; it's feeling sad and thinking you have to go through it alone. None of us should have to bear that burden. In the words of Ted Lasso himself,  We may feel sad at times but we need to remember we are not alone. When we're together, we share the load. We lift each other up. We remind each other of our worth, our potential, and the amazing things we're capable of. That's the power of a team. So the message is “we must believe in each other. Believe in the person next to you. Believe in their ability to overcome their struggles. Believe in hope. We must believe in miracles- it’s the little things: the smile from a friend when you need it most, the pat on the back that says 'I've got your back,' and the shared moments that remind us we’re not alone."

Every day we get up, we have a chance to make a difference. So let's embrace that. Let's believe in believing. And let's never let anyone feel like they have to face their sadness alone. We all have the ability to turn sadness into strength, fear into courage, and doubt into belief. Lift each other up and make every day a miracle. Go out there and show the world what belief looks like.

Just like Ted Lasso, who never stops believing in himself and his team, I hope I convinced them of their own ability to believe in themselves and let it guide them to success. If you haven't seen the series I recommend it highly!

Congratulations to Mikayla Duffy, Mikayla Giovenco, Holly Pooley and Sophie Heighes who graduated last Friday. We are very proud of them as they settle into their teaching careers at Our Lady of Fatima. May they experience many rewarding years as Primary School teachers and make a difference in all those young lives.
