Level 5 & 6 Wonga Weekly

Week 4, Term 1

🌿 WEEK THREE LEARNING

🌱 LITERACY

Reading Groups will begin this week. In their new, ability-based groups, students will be investigating an overarching mentor text, unpacking how great authors use writing conventions to convey meaning in their writing. A strong focus will be placed on identifying key vocabulary, parts of speech and key spelling patterns.

In Writing, students will focus on elements of narrative stories and how to build strong, relatable ideas that are clearly conveyed to their audience. They will explore:

- Author's voice

- Tense

- Elevating ideas

- Narrative devices like 'Show don't tell' and 'Give me 10'

What you can do at home

Help your child to set aside time to read - preferably every night. This will help them build important learning habits. You may also want to discuss what they are reading with them.

Discuss your child's writing learning goals and set aside some time to work on those goals.

🌱 NUMERACY

This week, students will continue to unpack properties of number, working with multiples, factors and indices to solve problems. A large focus will be placed on working through the vocabulary and steps required to solve multi-layered, real world questions. Students will continue to have the opportunity to collaborate on challenging maths tasks, requiring a growth mindset and positive dispositions.

What you can do at home

Discuss the importance of slowing down to understand the problem at hand. It may be the language that gives clues about how to solve the problem or it could be a multi-step problem. This will assist in your child understanding which formula to use to find an answer.
