Around the School

Visual Arts Term 1 - Rosemary Perri

Our school-wide Term One inquiry theme is "Growing Together". Each class participated in  creating a leaf using paint, paper and oil pastels. These different art mediums were used to collaboratively create our tree artwork. Growing Together celebrates our individual contributions to our vibrant connected faith filled community.

Italian- Signora Vozzo

Happy New Year to all families and friends of the St Mary’s Community!

I would like to share with you the fantastic work the children participated in when we celebrated the  Italian Language and Culture.

The children were part of a Mosaic activity on the day. Mosaic art has been around since 2000 years BC. Mosaics is the art of creating images with small pieces of coloured glass, stone or other materials. We used coloured kinder squares. These small flat pieces are called ‘tesserae.’ Mosaic art pieces were popular in ancient roman houses and in many Cathedrals throughout Italy.

Our mosaic piece reflects the Italian culture by showing Da Vinci’s famous painting, colourful historical palazzi, masks, foods such as grapes, cheese and cappuccino, soccer and the popular mode of transport - the vespa!

The many hours of preparation prior to the day, resulted in complete elation and satisfaction as the piece was displayed for the children and staff to enjoy.

The mosaic is displayed in the Specialist building.

Thank you all for your continued support. Looking forward to speaking to you on Mondays and Tuesdays.

This Year in Performing Arts - Jessica Earle

Welcome to another year of Performing Arts! After a successful production last year it seems like a hard act to follow but we have some wonderful activities planned for this year!

This year we will focus on performing in different contexts, performing in class time, performing at school events, such as the Art Show and also reviewing performances we see or experience.

Term 1 2024

During Term 1 we are setting up the expectations in the classroom and learning about how the Norms of our school apply in the different settings and diverse situations we learn, act, play and move in during Performing Arts.

We will learn the songs for our school context such as hymns for Mass the Assembly songs, birthday song, National Anthem etc. and also work on writing simple plays together to perform.

‘I’m not afraid of the Big Bad Wolf!’

Prep

Welcome preps to a new experience in Performing Arts. I look forward to learning together the different songs we sing at St Mary’s Primary school. This term we will be focussing on learning how to re-enact characters from stories we are told such as funny stories like Pig the Pug, The Day the Crayons Quit, or Click Clack Moo. We are learning about working together, working as a big group and in small groups such as with a partner by playing games, the One-Eyed Monster, Kangaroo Skippy Roo, Who Has the Egg and more!

Year 1 and 2

Year 1 and 2 are ready to learn how to connect characters together to retell a story. This term we will focus on learning together the main songs we sing at St Mary’s Primary School, and adding to our repertoire the songs we sing at Mass. We will explore in groups how to retell stories by representing characters from stories we know, such as fairy tales or from books we read. We will learn about how characters interact with each other by working together, working as a big group and in small groups such as with a partner. We will play team building games such as Night at the Museum, House Renovation and 1 Minute Rule which will help us learn how to shape our faces and bodies to represent characters and ideas.

Year 3 and 4

Year 3 and 4 learned how to tell stories last year and are now working towards telling stories with their own special twist. This term we will focus on learning together the main songs we sing at St Mary’s Primary School, and adding to our repertoire the songs we sing at Mass. We will explore in groups how to retell stories but with a twist by representing characters from stories we know, such as fairy tales or from books we read in a different way to how they are usually represented. We will develop script writing skills and learn how to tell a larger story using techniques of drama. We will play speech building games such as 1 Minute Rule, What Are You Doing and You Can’t Get Rid of Me which will help us learn how to use our voice to represent characters, situations and ideas.

Year 5 and 6

Year 5 and 6 learned the skills of performing last year and are now working towards leading, inventing and directing performances. This term we will focus on learning together the main songs we sing at St Mary’s Primary School, and adding to our repertoire the songs we sing at Mass. We will explore individually and together in groups how to retell a dramatic story through script writing, direction and invention. We will learn about the ancient techniques of drama, such as tableaux, mime, Greek chorus, synchronisation, echo, props and costuming to tell the Passion story as part of the Stations of the Cross at the end of Term. We will play speech building games such as 1 Minute Rule, If I Were You and I’m Not Telling You But which will help us learn how to use our voice to represent characters, situations and ideas.

Parents: How Can You Get Involved?

This year I would love to make some special instruments which can be used by our school for years to come. I have the blueprint drawings, instruction book and I also have some experts who are able to help show us how to make them. They require wood, chisels, chromatic tuner and woodworking skills. Some of the skills required are very advanced whilst other skills are quite basic and even children could join in with the making at different points of the process, if you’d like to learn how to make them please get involved!

If you think you might be interested in helping, or have resources we could use, please feel free to get in touch with me at jes.earle@smstkildaeast.catholic.edu.au.
