Setting Routines and Expectations at School and Home.

Welcome back to the 2024 school year at St Mary’s! We are well underway with our Start-Up Program, which will run for the first two weeks of the year. This program is specifically designed to help our students feel secure and confident in their new classes. One of the main components of this program is the lessons that support students in co-creating, understanding and following our learning routines and expectations. When students are familiar with their routines and know what is expected of them, they are less likely to be distracted and more willing to explore new learning opportunities.

This applies to learning at home as well. In order for students to truly retain what they have learned, ongoing practice and exposure to the concepts are crucial. When students engage in regular practice, both at school and at home, they are more likely to develop a strong foundation of skills that can be applied to more complex situations. As outlined in our Home Learning Policy, it is expected that students complete some homework each night. Just like in school, it is important to establish clear routines and expectations for successful home learning.

Tips for Effective Home Learning

Establish a Routine: Each family and student should create a unique routine for home learning. This routine should include consistent structures and designated times for studying.

Choose the Right Time: Find a time that works best for both the students and parents to focus on learning together. Setting a timer can help maintain a consistent amount of study time.

Create a Dedicated Space: Set up a specific area for home learning where the student can have all the necessary equipment and minimise distractions.

Show Interest and Positivity: Home learning should not be a battle. It is an opportunity to practise skills that students have already learned. Show appreciation for their effort and demonstrate an interest in their learning to foster a positive home-school partnership and encourage lifelong learning.

Avoid Providing Answers: It may be difficult, but refrain from giving your child the answers. Allowing them to struggle and find solutions independently helps develop important skills such as problem-solving, resilience, and persistence.

Communicate with the Teacher: If your child is struggling with their home learning, don't hesitate to reach out to their teacher. They are always willing to have a conversation and work with you to create a plan that supports your child's needs.

Home Learning Expectations

Teachers will provide you with information about our policy and expectations for your child's home learning within the next week. Additionally, they will regularly update our online Home Learning Portal with new educational materials. This portal will include learning schedules and activities that students will be covering in class each week. It will also enable students to continue learning even if they are absent due to illness, vacations, or other circumstances.
