The Big Six of Literacy
Research has shown that there are six key components that contribute to successful beginning reading. Because of the importance of these components, they have become known as the 'Big Six’: oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. In the early years of schooling, literacy lessons will incorporate the Big Six.
There are some really great resources on the Literacy Hub website to help support reading at home https://www.literacyhub.edu.au/for-families/resources-to-support-reading-at-home/ .
Home Reading
Thank you for supporting the learning done at school by reading with your child each night. All students in F-2 have a Home Reading Journal for you to keep a record of what they are reading. The journal has a couple of activity pages included, feel free to give these a go at home. If you have any questions about reading, please see your child's classroom teacher.
As part of our ongoing commitment to developing strong reading habits, we encourage all students in Years 3-6 to read for at least 20 minutes each evening at home. To support their learning, all students in these year levels are currently participating in engaging novel studies in their classrooms. It would be wonderful if your child could also have another book on the go at home to complement their class reading!
Current class novels are;
- Foundation : The Very Cranky Bear - focus on persuasive writing
- Year 1 : I Want My Hat Back - focus on persuasive writing
- Year 2 : The Lorax - focus on persuasive writing
- Year 3: Finding Our Heart - focus on personal response
- Year 4: The Arrival - focus on narrative writing
- Year 5: Dirrarn - focus on Factual Recount
