PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Last week, our students proudly took to the stage at KSC for the South Gippsland Schools Music Programme (SGSMP) Mid-Year Concert, delivering an inspiring evening of music, collaboration and community spirit. The concert showcased the dedication and growth of our young musicians, who performed with confidence and enthusiasm alongside peers from across the region. It was a wonderful celebration of learning, creativity and the power of music to bring people together. We thank our staff, families and the SGSMP team for their continued support in making opportunities like this possible for our students and to the audience – it was a packed house.

Today, we were equally excited to mark another significant milestone for our school—the installation of our new school signs. This achievement represents the culmination of 18 months of thoughtful planning and collaboration led by our Facilities Subcommittee, with meaningful contributions from our Student Representative Council (SRC) and Yarning Circle students.

The signage reflects both our identity and our deep respect for the land on which we learn and grow. Incorporating cultural elements of Bunurong Country—particularly the symbolism of the hills and the sea—the design honours the traditional custodians of this land. It also celebrates student voice, with unique symbols designed by our Yarning Circle students woven throughout the artwork.

We extend our sincere thanks to Bunurong artist Bianca Templar, who worked closely with students in an innovative online collaboration to bring this vision to life. The result is a stunning and meaningful piece of artwork that will welcome all who enter our school and stand as a lasting reminder of connection, culture and community.

Next week Korumburra Secondary College is hosting a visit from the Deputy Secretaries of the Department of Education, who chose KSC as the rural secondary college to visit this year. Our work on improving attendance has been noted and I will be presenting to them on how our attendance has lifted and the rate of unexplained absences has reduced. I am delighted that they will see our new signs and have the opportunity to meet our Yarning Circle and SRC who contributed to the project.

Together, these events highlight what makes our school so special - opportunities for students to shine, to contribute and to connect with something larger than themselves.

About the artwork – from the artist Bianca Templar of Takamuna rrala (Stand Strong) designs

The hands represent the kids and their journey of learning and growing both educationally and culturally, with the symbols present chosen by the kids through their possum skin cloak designs that they develop for their graduation. The surroundings have waves lines that represent sea country with the rock\boulder outlines representing the connection to land. Whenever carers, educators and children see this work I want them to be reminded of the importance of cultural growth and caring for sea and land country.
