From the Prefects...

Recently, student leaders from our school had the opportunity to attend the Emerging Leaders Summit, where they listened to inspiring presentations from Australian cricketer Nathan Lyon and leadership expert David Stewart. Throughout the day, students explored what it means to be an effective leader and how leadership extends far beyond holding a title or position. The summit focused on four key areas: leadership, self-leadership, credible leadership, and the five employment skills that are essential for success in both school and life.

One of the most valuable messages from the day was that leadership begins with self-leadership. Before leading others, individuals must be able to manage themselves, set goals, remain motivated, and demonstrate resilience when faced with challenges. Nathan Lyon shared insights from his sporting career, highlighting the discipline, perseverance, and commitment required to achieve success at the highest level. His experiences reinforced the idea that leadership is built through consistent effort and a willingness to learn from setbacks.

David Stewart spoke about the importance of credible leadership. Students learned that effective leaders earn trust and respect through their actions, integrity, and consistency. Rather than relying on authority, credible leaders lead by example, demonstrate accountability, and build positive relationships with those around them. This message encouraged students to consider how their everyday actions influence others.

The summit also explored five key employment skills: collaboration, effective communication, problem-solving, adaptability, and self-management. These skills are highly valued in schools, workplaces, sporting teams, and communities. Through interactive discussions and practical examples, students gained a greater understanding of how these skills contribute to personal success and effective leadership. The ability to work with others, communicate clearly, adapt to changing circumstances, and take responsibility for one's actions were highlighted as essential qualities for future leaders.

The Emerging Leaders Summit provided a valuable opportunity for students to reflect on their own leadership journeys and consider how they can make a positive impact within their school and wider community. The lessons shared by Nathan Lyon and David Stewart reinforced that leadership is not defined by a position or title, but by the choices people make, the example they set, and the way they support and inspire others. Students left the summit with a deeper understanding of leadership and a greater confidence in their ability to contribute positively both now and in the future.
