Co-curricular Update
Mrs Catherine Litchfield, Director of Co‑curricular Learning
At our Co-curricular Awards Assembly last week, our community came together to celebrate the many successes of the Summer co-curricular season. It was a privilege to recognise the achievements of our students across a wide range of activities, and to acknowledge the enthusiasm and commitment they bring to all aspects of school life. Congratulations to all award recipients, and to every student who participated so wholeheartedly over the summer months.

At Kinross Wolaroi School, we are fortunate to offer an exceptional breadth of co-curricular opportunities spanning sport, service, the arts, academic pursuits and global experiences. This year, that program has been recognised nationally, with the School named an Excellence Awardee at the Australian Education Awards. This recognition reflects the dedication of both staff and students, and is something the entire community can take pride in.
As the summer season drew to a close, it was encouraging to see the winter co-curricular program begin with such energy. Early home rugby fixtures have been outstanding, complemented by strong starts across soccer, hockey and netball. The Cadet Passing Out Parade and Dinner were significant highlights, and the Performing Arts Festival promises to be another memorable occasion.
There is also much to look forward to across the arts, with rehearsals for Beauty and the Beast well underway. Students are encouraged to support their peers by attending what will no doubt be a vibrant and impressive production.
Beyond campus, our students continue to represent the School with distinction. The Cattle Team’s participation at the Royal Easter Show, ongoing success in debating, and the Equestrian Team’s excellent performance at the Coonabarabran Expo—including another win in the polocrosse competition—demonstrate the breadth of talent and commitment across our community.
Opportunities for growth extend far beyond competition. Recent tours to Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Vietnam have provided students with transformative global experiences, broadening their perspectives and deepening their understanding of the world. Looking ahead, students will again have the opportunity to consider exchange programs—experiences that are consistently described as life-changing.
The value of co-curricular involvement, particularly sport, was further reinforced at a recent seminar by Australian Test cricketer Nathan Lyon. Reflecting on leadership and teamwork, he shared that his most memorable moments in cricket were not always his own achievements, but those of his teammates. His perspective serves as a reminder that being part of a team during school years plays a powerful role in shaping character.
Sport also develops critical life skills—resilience, discipline, communication and teamwork—that extend well beyond the field. As Lyon emphasised, the best players are often the best listeners, and those who contribute most positively to a team environment ultimately find the greatest success.
While celebrating achievement is important, so too is recognising the way in which our students conduct themselves. As the winter season begins, our students have demonstrated exemplary behaviour and sportsmanship, even in the face of less positive conduct from others. This reflects the values of Kinross Wolaroi School—competing with determination, while always upholding dignity and respect.
Students are reminded that how they play the game matters just as much as the result. There is no place for poor sportsmanship—whether through words or actions—and we must always strive to rise above it. By listening to coaches, supporting teammates and respecting opponents, we continue to build a strong and positive sporting culture.
This message extends beyond the field to everyday conduct, including online behaviour. Students are encouraged to consider carefully their use of social media and their digital presence. Expectations around behaviour apply in all environments, and the choices made online should reflect the same values upheld within the School community.
Attention to detail in presentation and uniform is another important aspect of representing the School with pride. Simple steps—wearing the correct uniform, adhering to guidelines and maintaining high personal standards—allow both students and staff to focus on performance and participation. As a former Headmaster wisely noted, “Take care of the little things and the big things will take care of themselves.”
As we move further into the winter season, students are encouraged to continue raising the bar—to train with purpose, perform with commitment and represent the School with pride. Above all, it is important to approach each opportunity with positivity and enthusiasm.
Finally, sincere thanks are extended to the co-curricular team, led by Nikki Jasprizza, for their work in coordinating programs and events throughout the year. Their efforts behind the scenes ensure that students have access to such a rich and rewarding co-curricular experience.
Once again, congratulations to all award recipients, and best wishes to all students for the season ahead.
