End Of Term 2 :

College Captains

Dear South Oakleigh College Community,

As we close off another incredible term here at the college, we would like to take a moment of acknowledge the journeys and successes of the past ten weeks.

On 4 May, students from years 7 to 12 gathered at Karkarook Park to participate in our annual House Cross Country competition. Though it was an optional day for the senior year levels, it was wonderful to see so much participation from a range of students. Congratulations to those particularly successful students who advanced to the next stage of cross country, we wish them luck in the Monash division competition.

On 16 June, students from South Oakleigh undertaking a VCAA external examination at the end of the year joined students from across Victoria in taking the General Achievement Test. A gruelling four-hour exam for some, the GAT is a wonderful opportunity to practice exam skills and prove your general knowledge. To give exam-takers the best possible environment, students not taking the GAT had a pupil free day. Congratulations to all who took the exam, we are excited to enter the next exam period at the end of the year.

On 23 June, South Oakleigh held its annual House Athletics carnival. It was a beautiful day of, luckily, clear skies. It was incredible to see so many students getting into the house spirit and to see the level of participation continuing to rise. Congratulations to all students who competed and those who placed well and to Grevillea house for winning the chant and the cup. Good luck to those students competing in the next stage.

That’s all from us for now. We hope all staff and students have a restful holiday, and we are excited to see you at the beginning of Semester 2.

College Vice Captains

This term has been a busy one for the Vice School Captains!

We participated in international conferences with our sister school, Wuhu #1 Secondary School in China; led our own bake sale for the Year 11 Formal Committee; completed our Senior Customised Jerseys initiative; held a front-of-house sale at the Eras of Rock Concert, supporting our family and friends in their performances; helped out with the SRC Breakfast Club almost every week; and even met with students from other schools at an interschool leadership forum!

We have also finalised the design for the Class of 2027 Year 12 bomber jackets, meeting with multiple businesses to discuss the best options.

Coming into Term 3, we can't wait for our Year 11 Formal and to see all the hard work that has gone into making it happen, along with the many other exciting events taking place throughout the term.

A big thank you to all the staff we have worked with on every event: Ms Lucas, Ms Jenkins, Mr Fernandez, Mr Picone, Mr Katsianos, Mr Myors, Ms Ferguson, Mr Prewett, Ms Kosztyi, Nancy, and Ms Koziaris. We couldn't have done any of it without their guidance and support.

We look forward to an exciting Term 3!

SRC

Dear Students, Staff and Parents

As we reflect on another successful term, it is important to recognise the hard work, dedication and teamwork demonstrated by our SRC members throughout Term 2.

To begin the term, our various SRC portfolios held several meetings to discuss and prepare for our major event of the term, Australia's Biggest Morning Tea. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of all SRC members, the event was executed exceptionally well and proved to be a great success. Students, staff and members of the school community came together to support an important cause while enjoying a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Through the introduction of the SRC's new card reader system, we were able to raise over $500 for charity. This was a fantastic achievement and demonstrated the positive impact that student leadership can have on both our school and the wider community.

The event also served as a positive opportunity for students to connect and unwind before Year 8 - 11 students commenced their semester exams, and our Year 12 students completed the General Achievement Test.

To conclude the term, the school community enjoyed an exciting Athletics Carnival. The day saw outstanding participation from students; impressive displays of sportsmanship and a significant number of House Points earned across all houses. The SRC was responsible for operating the canteen throughout the day, which proved to be another successful event.

On the Thursday of the final week, our Student Leadership Team came together to host our annual Celebratory Breakfast Club. We were delighted to welcome members of our local Rotary Club, whose ongoing support plays an important role in the success of our Breakfast Club program. As always, the event was extremely popular amongst students, teachers and staff, providing an opportunity for the school community to come together and celebrate another successful semester.

Looking ahead to Term 3, the SRC is excited to host its largest event of the year, Welfest Week. Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities designed to promote wellbeing, school connectedness and student engagement. These events include our annual MasterChef Competition, Krispy Kreme Day accompanied by an Out of Uniform theme, Active Friday, a Chalk Art Competition and our popular Tag a Friend initiative.

We encourage all students to keep an eye on Compass for further information and updates regarding these exciting events.

On behalf of the S.R.C. Presidents thank you to all SRC members for your continued commitment, enthusiasm and support throughout Term 2. We look forward to another exciting and successful term ahead.

As always, if you have any questions, feedback, or ideas, please don’t hesitate to contact Soham Dhital or Mai Pandjaputra via Teams or email at (SDHI15@schools.vic.edu.au) and (MAPAN9@schools.vic.edu.au)

7B Peer Support Team Report from Inara 10D

This term, the Year 10 Peer Support students have been attending Year 7 Mentor classes weekly, where we have gotten the chance to connect, support and create bonds with the Year 7s.

Each week we joined the Year 7 mentor classes and their teachers to help run the lessons. We got to lead discussions about wellbeing and values, assist them with work, and finish off the class with fun activities and games. We also got to build some great bonds with the Year 7 students from chatting, sharing experiences and working together. We really value the connections that we’ve been able to make with them and how much we’ve gotten to know each other so far this year. We have really enjoyed guiding the Year 7s through their first year of Secondary School and hope that this leaves a lasting impact on their next few years here at South Oakleigh.

Next term, the Year 10 Peer Support students will be writing our own lesson plans for Year 7 mentor classes. We are really looking forward to getting to create lessons that will interest the younger students and teach them things that we wish we learnt in Year 7.

It’s been a great term overall, and we hope that the next term will be even better!
