Numeracy News
It has been a busy and exciting term in Mathematics as students continue to develop their numeracy skills through both future-focused learning and real-world applications.
Our Year 9 students have recently been exploring their future Maths pathways as they prepare for subject selections and their transition into Year 10. Students have been supported to understand the differences between the Pre-Methods/Specialist and General Mathematics streams, while considering their strengths, interests and future aspirations.
Part of this process has been investigating course prerequisites and understanding how their mathematical pathway can support future study and career opportunities. Through discussions, reflection activities and pathway planning, students have been encouraged to make informed decisions about the mathematics stream that best aligns with their goals. We recommend students continue these conversations with family during the break.
Meanwhile, our Year 7 students have been putting their mathematical skills into practice through an engaging Zoo Design Project. Working as aspiring zoo designers, students explored animal enclosure using regulations to determine the minimum space requirements for a range of species.
They then designed their own zoo layout, making thoughtful decisions about animal selection, enclosure placement and visitor experiences. Students applied their understanding of area, perimeter, measurement and financial mathematics to calculate the costs associated with constructing enclosures and establishing their zoo. This authentic learning experience challenged students to think critically, solve problems and see the important role mathematics plays in real-world planning and design.
We look forward to sharing more of our students' mathematical achievements throughout the year.
