Medieval Day

The Year 8 Medieval Day was a fantastic event, providing Year 8 students with an engaging and interactive learning experience that brought history to life.

Through hands-on activities, expert presentations, and exciting demonstrations, students deepened their understanding of medieval Europe and feudal Japan while developing their curiosity and enthusiasm for the past. The highlight of the day was the medieval tournament, which created a fun and memorable atmosphere for all involved.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the event and gained valuable insights that enhanced their classroom learning. A comment from a Year 8 student “My favourite part of Medieval Day was playing some of the games that people enjoyed during medieval times, it helped us understand what entertainment was like centuries ago. I also enjoyed learning about medieval armour and weapons, order by ordeal and the history of ancient Japan.

The day showed how history isn't just about dates and events, it helped us understand how people lived and how societies have changed over time.”

We have begun by getting familiar with the Australian Constitution – by role playing the King, Governor General, Houses of Parliament as well as a Parliamentary Inquiry. We have also ‘bedazzled’ our pocket Constitutions, to give it the requisite ‘main character’ energy for this Area of Study.

As we navigate this part of the Study Design, which is considered by some to be a bit dry, we have been sure to maintain a good level of fun in our learning – complete with some Kahoot, Quizlet Live, Jeopardy and of course several crazy acronyms and other mnemonic devices, to make sure we can easily recall the relevant Key Knowledge, before applying the all-important Key Skills.
