Prep/1 Mainstream

Students have completed our ‘weather’ Discovery Learning focus and were fortunate to be able to participate in and/or be an audience member for some wonderful weather forecast presentations!
Currently in Discovery Learning, students have begun to explore the features of different types of houses. They have been learning about various houses that are suited to different types of climates! Students have been able to use their imaginations to create their own house designs/blueprints. They will also have the opportunity to explore materials to discover those that are most suited to housebuilding, including experimenting with materials that are waterproof and weather resistant, and using natural materials to explore some of their construction ideas.
This week during Social Emotional Learning, we have been focusing on demonstrating respect for our environment by ensuring we work together to keep our classroom clean and tidy. This means putting things away at the end of a lesson, caring for our classroom materials and doing the right thing even when no one is watching.
Out in the playground we put our rubbish in the bin. We take responsibility for our school environment by reminding others to do the same and not walking on by if we see some rubbish on the ground.
Literacy
In Reading, we will continue to focus on phonics, including sounding out words, reading fluency and spelling words. In Foundation, we have now begun stage 3 sounds which include Yasmin Yak - y and Roxy Rabbit - r..
Foundation students should continue to take home their reading folders to practise reading at home.
In Year 1, the focus has been revising stage 5 and 6 including plural s and es, ck - black duck, sh, - shed shop, ch - chicken and chips, th - thud, thump, thunk. Year one students should practise their reading at home.
In Writing, students are focusing on the following secretarial skills:
- Writing the sounds they hear in each word
- Starting a sentence with a capital letter
- Putting a finger space between each word
- Ending a sentence with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
- Forming letters correctly
Maths
In Mathematics, students continue to learn songs and verses to build an understanding of time. This includes the months of the year, the times of the day and the days of the week.
Last week, we explored efficient counting strategies and applied our knowledge of "ten ones is one ten" to real life situations. This included participating in a class ‘stocktake’, that allowed students to practise their counting skills to answer a variety of questions, such as:
How many do we have of __?
Do we have enough of __ for the whole class?
Is there anything missing from this set?
How can I prove that my total is correct?
How can I organise my collection so that I don't have to count them all again?
This week, we are moving on to continuing, creating and finding the missing elements in repeating patterns and number sequences (skip counting), including with Australian Coins.
