Subject Selection Process
Dean of Senior Years-Katrina Mansfield and Head of Futures, Partnerships & VET- Richard Braithwaite

As Year 10 students prepare for SET planning and Senior subject selection, and Year 12 students get ready for QTAC applications, the College has offered a range of experiences to support informed, confident decision-making.
Earlier this term, Year 10 students participated in a tertiary visit day to experience campus life. Students visited UQ, UniSC, ACU and South Bank TAFE, exploring disciplines including Law, Psychology, Allied Health, Engineering, Business and International Relations. Student Ambassadors led workshops and shared insights about the transition from school to further study.
Our annual Careers Expo Day also provided students with opportunities to engage with representatives from universities, private RTOs, the ADF, employers and Queensland Police. As part of the day, Year 10 students took part in a Careers Immersion, attending two workshops with guest speakers from more than fifteen career and industry areas. We thank all presenters for their time, generosity and expertise.
Pathway preparation has also been a key focus of the Futures Hub, with a range of lunchtime presentations offered during First Break. Guest speakers from the University of Queensland, University of the Sunshine Coast, QUT and Australian Catholic University have shared information about courses, pathways, scholarships, early entry and a snapshot of university life. On Wednesday 17 June, the Futures Hub will host a guest speaker from Griffith University, and next term Mater Education will visit to discuss pathways into Nursing.
Families and students can access further resources via the Futures & Subjects tile on MyMtA (MyMtA – Futures & Subject Selection). This includes University early offer information and scholarships for 2027, university updates, the QTAC guide, the TAFE@School guide, and vocational education updates from Mater Education, TAFE Queensland and the Australian Defence Force. A monthly Futures Hub newsletter is also emailed to senior students, featuring employment opportunities, apprenticeships, university open days and scholarships.
Year 10 students have had strong exposure to post-school options throughout Semester 1, building on careers learning in the Middle Years phase. Opportunities have included tertiary visits, industry expert presentations, vocational education and pathway sessions, access to the BEYOND platform (to help students identify strengths and suitable career areas), and cohort meetings that unpack the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and available pathways.
As students finalise their Pre-SET Plan, families are encouraged to discuss goals, future aspirations, and subject and pathway choices together.
To support parents and carers, a Subject Selection Information Evening will be held in the San Damiano Centre on Monday, 15 June. The 2027 Year 8 and 9 Subject Selection presentation begins at 5.30pm (arrivals from 5:15 pm), followed by the 2027 Year 10 and 11 Subject Selection presentation at 6:30 pm (arrival from 6.15pm).
The evening will cover senior pathways (including QCE, ATAR and ranking eligibility, and vocational education), the implications of scaling on ATAR, subjects available at the College in 2027 (subject to sufficient demand), subject selection advice, and key processes and timelines.
The 2027 Subject Handbooks will be available after the Information Evening via the Futures & Subjects tile on the MyMtA dashboard. Families are encouraged to review the handbook before finalising subject selections.
Students will also be supported through SET Planning meetings with mentors, scheduled for Thursday 16 and Friday 17 July. Further information about the SET planning process will be sent to parents and students shortly.
We are grateful for the many organisations and speakers who have partnered with the College to broaden students’ understanding of future pathways. With strong guidance, quality information and family support, students are well placed to make thoughtful choices for the Senior Phase of Learning.
Further information is available via MyMtA, and we encourage families to attend the upcoming Subject Selection Information Evening.
