International Day of People with a Disability

Ability Day and the Dylan Alcott Foundation

December 3 was International Day of People with a Disability. CNPS celebrated it with a week of activities and finished the week off by wearing wacky hats and hair and raising money for the Dylan Alcott Foundation with Ability Day. Ability Day is a national movement to recognise, respect, and celebrate the contributions of people with disability in our communities while also raising more than $200 for the Dylan Alcott Foundation (DAF).  https://www.dylanalcottfoundation.com.au/about

Please see below for some of our activities last week.

IDPwD is a United Nations (UN) day observed internationally. It aims to promote community awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.

Each year the UN announces a theme to observe for International Day of People with Disability. The annual theme provides an overarching focus on how society can strive for inclusivity through the removal of physical, technological and attitudinal barriers for people with disability. This has been occurring since 1992 when the General Assembly announced 3 December as the International Day of Disabled Persons.

In Australia, IDPwD is a joint effort between government, schools, organisations, community groups, businesses and individuals.

IDPwD is an opportunity to be part of creating an inclusive and diverse community for the 5.5 million people with disability in Australia.

The Australian Government through the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing funds a national program to help promote and raise awareness of this day.

1/2S acknowledged International Day of Persons with Disabilities by having an important conversation about how we are all different and beautiful in our own ways. We discussed disabilities that can be seen and those that can’t, and why it’s important to treat everyone with kindness, respect, and equity.

We watched a video about Tom Yendell, an incredible artist who creates his artwork using his feet. Inspired by his creativity, we took part in an activity where we attempted to create artwork using body parts other than our hands. This challenge helped us reflect on different ways people use their strengths and adapt their techniques. Students shared that the experience gave them a deeper appreciation for how people with disabilities express themselves, pursue their passions, and contribute their talents to the world.
