Roadworks on Canterbury Road

Please see below for a project update for the Canterbury Road Improvements, Waterloo Street to Sunset Drive.

We’re improving safety, connectivity and traffic flow at the Canterbury Road and Waterloo Street, Great Ryrie Street and Sunset Drive intersections in Heathmont.

We’ve completed the first stage of major works at the Waterloo Street and Canterbury Road intersection. The new traffic lights are expected to be switched on and the intersection opened from late-November.

When to expect us

From late-November, crews will begin working at the Great Ryrie Street and Canterbury Road intersection.

Works will include:

• Drainage works on Canterbury Road near the Sunset Drive intersection.
• Fully controlling the right turn at the traffic lights from Canterbury Road to Great Ryrie Street.
• Building the new indented bus lane on Canterbury Road.
• Installing dedicated traffic lights for buses.

Crews will be on site between 7:00am and 5:00pm, Mondays to Fridays. There may be times where crews will work on Saturdays.

There will be times where crews need to work at night when traffic volumes are lower to minimise disruptions to traffic and keep crews safe. We’ll let the community know before night works begin. Please note, these dates and times are subject to favourable weather conditions and the contractor’s program of works.

What to expect during this stage of works

• 24/7 lane closures on Canterbury Road within the work site.
• Closure of the pedestrian crossing on Canterbury Road at Great Ryrie Street. Use the pedestrian crossing east of Sunset Drive instead.
• On-street parking impacts within the work area.
• Access to private properties and community spaces will be maintained.
• Medium levels of noise. Crews use modern equipment to keep noise to a minimum. However, the works will unavoidably emit some noise and light. For the safety of road users and workers on site, reversing beepers are required on all machinery.
• Some vibrations and dust around the work site.
• A reduced speed limit of 40km/h around the work site to ensure the safety of crews and all road users.

What’s next

Following works at the Great Ryrie Street and Canterbury Road intersection, works will focus on improvements at the Sunset Drive and Canterbury Road intersection. This will include permanently closing the right turns in and out of Sunset Drive.
