Junior Years Report

Celebrating a fantastic year for our Junior Students

As the year draws to a close, our Year 9 cohort has had an exciting and enriching year filled with new experiences, personal growth, and opportunities to prepare for the transition into Year 10.

Our students have stepped confidently into the Year 10 Commencement Program, embracing the expectations and routines of senior school. It has been fantastic to see them engage positively with new subjects, pathways planning, and increased responsibility as they begin shaping their senior learning journey. Earlier this year, students attended our City Camp, where they explored Melbourne’s cultural, historical, and social landmarks. From navigating public transport to participating in group activities, students developed independence, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. The camp was a highlight for many, providing memories and experiences that will stay with them well into senior school.

Another major event was the Outdoor Hike Camp, where students challenged themselves physically and mentally in a natural environment. They demonstrated resilience, cooperation, and leadership while completing hikes, setting up camp, and working together. Staff were proud to see students stepping out of their comfort zones and supporting one another throughout the experience.

To support students in developing future career pathways, our Year 9s took part in immersive taster days at Geelong Tech School. These hands-on sessions introduced students to STEM-focused industries, emerging technologies, and real-world problem-solving. The programs encouraged curiosity and helped students consider possible future study and career directions as they move towards their senior years.

We are incredibly proud of the maturity, enthusiasm, and growth our Year 9 students have shown this year. With Year 10 on the horizon, they are well-prepared for the exciting opportunities ahead.

Miss Ansett

Year 9 Coordinator

As we reach the end of another busy and rewarding school year, we are filled with pride for the achievements, growth and resilience demonstrated by our Year 7, 8 and 9 students throughout 2025. Their enthusiasm for learning, willingness to challenge themselves, and commitment to our school values have made 2025 a truly memorable year at Lara Secondary College.

One of the highlights of the year was the incredible success of our camps across the junior year levels. Our Year 7 students embraced the adventure at Cave Hill Creek in Beaufort, building friendships, confidence and teamwork skills. Our Year 8 students enjoyed a rich and active experience at Warra Gnan in Warrnambool, strengthening their connections to each other and the environment. The surfing lessons, coastal bike ride, kayaking, lawn bowls and mini golf were tremendous highlights. Our Year 9 cohort participated in a diverse and engaging Connections program that included the Melbourne Urban Camp, a coastal overnight hike along the Great Ocean Road, and a variety of connections activities—all promoting independence, leadership and personal growth.

The energy and school spirit displayed during our House Swimming and Athletics Carnivals was exceptional amongst our junior students. Many students then took their talents even further, proudly representing Lara Secondary College in Interschool Sport. Their dedication, sportsmanship and encouragement of their peers was impressive to witness.

Many students also dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to extra curricular activities like 'Grease' the musical, and showcased their musical talent at special events ad evenings, performing for the public.

Throughout the year, students also represented themselves and our college with maturity and respect across numerous excursions, fully engaging with learning beyond the classroom. Their enthusiasm was just as strong within our school, where they participated wholeheartedly in incursions and wellbeing programs hand-picked to build knowledge, confidence and resilience.

We are also delighted to acknowledge the thousands of Success Passes awarded to students in Years 7–9 this year. Success Passes recognise and celebrate the daily demonstration of our college values: Commitment, Excellence, Respect and Teamwork. They reflect not only academic growth but the personal qualities that make our school community a great place to be.

A special mention goes to our Year 9 students, who embraced their work experience placements with enthusiasm and maturity. Their efforts in real-world environments showcase their readiness for the next stages of their learning in the senior years.

We congratulate every Year 7, 8 and 9 student for their efforts, achievements and contributions this year. Their hard work and positive attitude have truly made us proud. We look forward to seeing what they accomplish next year.

And finally, an enormous thank you to our Year Level Coordinators, Rebecca Perkins (Year 7), Josh Walker (Year 8) and Jacqueline Ansett (Year 9) who have supported our students endlessly this year. Their encouragement has been unwavering and we are so pleased that they will continue in their Year Level Coordinator roles in 2026 to further support our families.

Wishing everyone a safe, active and merry Christmas and New Year. See you in 47 sleeps!

Every Day Counts: The Importance of School Attendance

At Lara Secondary College, we know that every day at school matters. Daily attendance helps students make the most of learning, friendships and opportunities that shape their future.

We understand there are times when your child may need to miss school. To help minimise disruption, please consider scheduling family holidays or medical appointments outside of school hours. If your child is feeling worried about friendships, schoolwork or exams, coming to school is the best way to get support — staying home can make worries feel bigger.

If your child is finding it hard to attend, please reach out to their Year Level Coordinator or Sub School Leader — we’re here to help. And remember to let us know about any absences promptly via Compass.

For more information about the importance of everyday attendance, see Attendance and Missing School.

Remember, Every Day Counts.
