Let's Talk Careers

Aim high - seek a part-time job!

As the summer holidays approach, many students look forward to a well-earned break from classes and exams. But the long weeks ahead also offer a golden opportunity: gaining real-world experience through part-time work or volunteering. These activities not only make great use of your time but also help you develop skills and qualities that future employers and universities value most. You have 50 days of holidays!

A part-time job teaches far more than how to earn a wage. It builds reliability, communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving - the highly sought-after “soft skills” that underpin success in any career. Whether you’re serving customers in a café, assisting in retail, or contributing to a local project, you’re learning to adapt, take initiative, and handle responsibility; qualities that stand out on any résumé.

Volunteering offers similar benefits, with the added reward of giving back to your community. Supporting a charity, helping at an event, or mentoring younger students strengthens empathy, leadership, and a sense of purpose. Employers, TAFEs, and universities all recognise the value of these experiences - they demonstrate commitment, character, and a willingness to contribute.

Beyond the immediate skills, both work and volunteering open doors to exploring different industries and roles. You might even discover a passion for something unexpected - a future career path you hadn’t considered.

So, this summer, think about how you can use your time to grow, connect, and explore. You’ll return to school with new confidence, fresh insights, and experiences that set you apart—both now and in the years ahead.

With all good wishes for the festive season.
