Social Media Delay

What Families Need to Know and How Lumen Christi College Can Support You

From 10 December 2025, Australia has enforced new laws requiring social media platforms to restrict access for children under 16. All current restricted platforms are listed here and under-16s will still be able to see publicly available social media content that does not require logging into an account. Restricted platforms must take ‘reasonable steps’ to prevent underage accounts or face penalties of up to $49.5 million. The penalties target the platforms not children or parents.

Why This Matters

Research has also shown that the shift to young people increasing social media use on phones has disrupted key developmental processes, replacing free play and real-world social learning with screen-based interactions. This law offers a chance for a community-wide reset, encouraging and allowing more time for friendships, sport, arts, and family connection.

Lumen Christi’s Response

  • No school activity will require an under-16 social media account
  • ICT policies and firewalls block banned platforms
  • Digital literacy and wellbeing lessons will continue
  • Lumen Christi College will continue to monitor advice from the eSafety Commissioner, follow CEWA directive and update additional banned platforms as they arise

Practical Steps for Families

Below are some tips for parents to help through this process:

  1. Audit accounts: Identify which platforms your child uses
  2. Download memories: Save photos and memories before 10 December
  3. Plan alternative communication: Move to email, school apps, or phone for team and group communication
  4. Reduce exposure: remove highest-risk apps, disable notifications
  5. Set boundaries: Nightly switch-off times, non-screen rituals
