Dear Families,

As we reach the end of Term 4, we would like to congratulate all our Grade 1 and 2 students on a fantastic year of learning, growth, and achievement. It has been a busy and exciting term, and we are incredibly proud of the progress every student has made academically, socially, and emotionally.

LITERACY

In phonics, students developed their understanding of suffixes (word endings that change meaning, tense, or number). These skills help students read and spell with greater confidence and accuracy. We explored the following suffixes:

ing- shows an action happening now (jumping, running, singing)

s or es- used to make plural nouns or show more than one (dogs, cats, farms, dishes, buses)

er- means “more” (taller, bigger) or can mean a person who does something (runner, teacher)

ed- shows something happened in the past (jumped, played, looked)

-ed can sound like /t/, /d/, or /id/.

In reading, students continued to build fluency, comprehension and vocabulary through guided reading and independent practise. Our reading focus was to explore Indigenous texts and form opinions.  Students learnt how to critically engage with the texts and make opinions by providing reasons that are supported by evidence from the text.

In writing, we placed a particular focus on narrative writing and introduced students to a variety of narrative genres including fantasy, adventure, spooky and humour. Students built their knowledge about the type of characters, settings, problems and solutions in each of these genres. After building their knowledge and understanding about each genre, students chose one of them to create their own narrative stories. Students practised planning a clear beginning, middle, and end using  linear progression, building characters and settings, and adding detail to make their stories engaging. We’re so proud of the creativity, imagination, and improvement we've seen in their writing!

NUMERACY

In maths, Students learnt about locations and directions. They learnt how to -

-use positional language such as next to, behind, between, left, right, above, below.

-to give and follow simple directions around the classroom and school.

-describe movement on maps using words like forwards, backwards, turn, near, far

-read and create simple maps, pathways, and grid drawings.

These activities helped students developing  spatial awareness, problem-solving, and communication skills.

SEL/INQUIRY

InSEL, students continued to engage with 'The Resilience Project' through a lesson per week to focus on gratitude, mindfulness, and empathy. Students have been learning about understanding their strengths, and the strengths of others. We have explored the importance of listening as a life skill to ensure effective communication with others.

Our inquiry unit this term is all about dinosaurs - who they were and what we know about them. To demonstrate their learning about dinosaurs, students created posters about their chosen dinosaurs including information about their external features, diet, habitats and some facts about them. Students have shown their creativity and critical thinking abilities to present the information they gathered using the ipads/laptops.
