Middle School

As we continue to navigate the ever-evolving digital landscape, a world that didn’t shape most of our own teenage years, our school remains committed to supporting students and families in developing healthy technology habits.
While technology and devices offer powerful tools for learning, connection, and creativity, they also present challenges in how they are used. Educating our students and establishing clear boundaries around device use are key strategies in helping to prevent overuse and its potential impacts.
Although screens can enhance learning and connection, excessive use can lead to negative outcomes such as fatigue, reduced participation in social activities, mood changes, and diminished academic performance.
One helpful resource is the website of the eSafety Commissioner (www.esafety.gov.au), which offers practical advice for families on setting boundaries and initiating important conversations at home.

Survey Insights on the Use of AI in Learning
At Oakleigh Grammar, we have been actively exploring how to approach the use of Generative AI in our teaching and learning. Recently, both the Middle School and Senior School conducted surveys with students and teachers to gather their views, needs and concerns on this topic.
We received 33 responses from teachers and 117 responses from students, with additional student responses still coming in. We are very pleased with this strong level of engagement and thank everyone who contributed.
What the Surveys Told Us
Student responses showed:
- Most students are somewhat or very familiar with AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot
- The majority see AI as helpful for understanding, revision and idea generation
- Many are unsure about what is acceptable use and want clearer guidance
- There is strong interest in subject-specific advice and teacher modelling
Some interesting quotes from students:
“If we could limit certain things and what we have access to, AI could be a very beneficial tool used in schools.” “Nope it’s a very useful tool.” “Should be taught how to use it for the future.”
Teacher responses showed:
- Most are familiar with AI and many are already seeing its impact in student work
- Benefits include time-saving for planning and feedback, and enhancing learning
- Top concerns include academic integrity, student over-reliance, and critical thinking
- Many want support with task design and consistent school-wide guidelines
Some interesting quotes from teachers:
“Students need clear messaging about how AI can support not replace their learning.” “AI is the future. We should guide students to use it in a positive way.” “Very important issue to address.”
Next Steps
The survey results have been shared with both Middle School and Senior School staff to support continued discussion and planning. They will also be shared with students shortly.
Thank you to all the teachers who shared their perspectives and suggestions. Special thanks to Ash, Manoj and the home group teachers for supporting the rollout of the surveys. And of course, thank you to our students for speaking honestly and openly.
The final Oakleigh Grammar Guidelines for Generative AI in Education will be developed after consultation and will be shaped directly by what teachers and students have told us.
