As part of their Greek Studies program, Year 7 students at Oakleigh Grammar recently attended the annual cultural exhibition titled "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body – The Athletic Heritage of the Hellenism of Anatolia." Held in May 2025, this inspiring exhibition is part of the Ten-Day Tribute to Hellenism of Asia Minor and is organised by the Educational Institution "Hellenism of Anatolia, from the Aegean to Pontos," under the auspices of the Australian Federation of Pontian Associations.
This year’s theme placed a spotlight on the vibrant sporting culture that once thrived in Asia Minor, Constantinople, and Pontos, regions with deep Greek historical roots. The exhibition explored how organised sports clubs, many of which were formed by Greek communities prior to 1922, played a significant role in maintaining cultural identity and unity. After the Asia Minor Catastrophe, these clubs became a foundation for the re-establishment and creation of many modern sports teams in Greece, serving as a bridge between past and present.
Our students had a fantastic time engaging with the exhibition. They participated in hands-on activities and interactive displays that brought history to life. Of particular interest were the stories of various soccer teams originating from Asia Minor, which sparked lively discussions and deeper appreciation for the resilience and enduring spirit of these communities.
The exhibition offered more than just historical insight, it provided an opportunity for our students to connect with the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Anatolian Hellenism. Through this experience, they gained a richer understanding of how sport, identity, and heritage intertwine, and how the legacy of the past continues to inspire generations today.
