Hellenic Culture

Students at Oakleigh Grammar continue to actively participate in a range of events that celebrate and preserve Hellenic culture.  With a deep sense of pride and respect, both Greek and non-Greek students contribute meaningfully to commemorative ceremonies and cultural activities that reflect the values and traditions of Greece. These events not only honour the past but also foster a spirit of unity, remembrance, and cultural understanding among our school community.

On Sunday 18 May 2025, a group of Oakleigh Grammar students attended the Pontian Greek Genocide Commemoration, organised by the Coordinating Committee of Pontian Associations in Melbourne.  The memorial service took place at the Holy Monastery of Axion Estin in Northcote and was followed by a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Monument to the Fallen.

School Captain Natasha Kaniadakis and Middle School Captain Chrisanthy Psaras proudly laid a wreath on behalf of the school. Students also joined the community for an afternoon tea, engaging in meaningful reflection and showing their support for this important historical commemoration.

In another powerful display of remembrance and respect, 25 students from Oakleigh Grammar took part in the Battle of Crete Commemoration Ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance on Saturday 24 May.  This solemn occasion paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of Greek and ANZAC soldiers who fought side by side during the Battle of Crete and throughout World War II.

With deep humility and pride, School Captain

Alexander Korlos and School Vice Captain Michaela Miller laid a wreath on behalf of the Oakleigh Grammar community, honouring those who gave their lives for freedom and peace.  The moment was both moving and memorable, as students stood in quiet reflection, surrounded by the enduring legacy of bravery and resilience.

On Sunday 25 May, selected students continued their tribute by attending a heartfelt Doxology at St Catherine Greek Orthodox Parish.  Surrounded by faith, tradition, and history, they offered prayers for the fallen, embracing the gravity of their sacrifice with reverence and a profound sense of gratitude. These experiences left a lasting impression on our students, reminding them of the importance of remembering the past while upholding the values of unity, peace, and respect in today’s world.

Oakleigh Grammar was also honoured to receive a distinguished delegation during an official visit to the school, led by Vice Admiral Theodoros Mikropoulos, Deputy Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, and his wife Mrs. Pagona Zeimpeki. Accompanying them were Lieutenant Commander Dimitrios Lekkakos, Colonel Kyriakos Kyriakakos (Defence Attaché of the Embassy of Greece in Canberra), and his wife Mrs. Vasileia Konou.  The visit was a meaningful exchange of values, heritage, and mutual respect, highlighting the strong ties between Australia and Greece.

We extend our warmest congratulations to all the students who have represented Oakleigh Grammar with honour, respect, and cultural pride.  Their involvement in these significant events exemplifies the values of global citizenship, community service, and the proud celebration of Hellenic identity that lies at the heart of our school.
