"A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." Antoine de Saint-Exupéry,

It’s been a busy and exciting term in the TAS (Technological and Applied Studies) Department, with students across all year levels engaging in a variety of hands-on learning experiences, such as experimenting with textile decoration techniques, crafting café-style hot beverages, and designing functional wooden desk organisers that have allowed them to develop creativity, problem-solving skills, and technical knowledge.

The Year 7 and 8 Technology Mandatory classes have been hard at work building their skills through creative and practical projects. In Textiles, Year 8 students proudly completed their drawstring bag projects, showcasing a range of decorative techniques such as stencilling and tie-dyeing, which align with the curriculum outcomes related to design, experimentation, and applying creative processes in textile projects. Meanwhile, Timber Technologies and Engineering have constructed desk organisers, model bridges, and cars—each project helping to develop their design thinking, tool use, and confidence in working with different materials.

In Food Technology, students across Year 9 and Year 10 have been expanding their practical kitchen skills through engaging and delicious recipies. Year 9 students have been mastering the art of making pancakes, learning key cooking techniques such as measuring, mixing, and pan control. Meanwhile, Year 10 students have embraced the world of café culture by practising their café art techniques. Their focus has been on creating decorative finishes on hot chocolates, with some impressive latte art skills emerging from the kitchen!

Year 12 Industrial Timber students are currently putting the final touches on their major projects. These impressive pieces demonstrate advanced skills in design, construction, and finishing techniques. Students have been working on furniture items such as tables, desks, and storage solutions, each showcasing individual creativity and craftsmanship. Stay tuned for next term’s update, where we’ll highlight some of their outstanding completed works!

We are incredibly proud of the effort, creativity and progress of all TAS students this term and look forward to sharing more exciting learning in Term 4.
