Students on the Springvale Campus have been actively involved in revitalising the school garden. They began by clearing weeds, adding fresh garden soil, and mixing it with existing soil and cow manure to enrich the beds. Autumn and winter vegetables have now been planted, including broccoli, cauliflower, cos lettuce, rocket, spinach, snow peas, carrots, and beetroot.
In addition to planting, students have also been busy pruning branches and relocating weeds to create compost piles beneath the banana clumps. The banana plants are thriving, with numerous flowers and fruiting clusters. To harvest the bananas, the stem is cut down and the cluster is placed in a black plastic bag for a few days to ripen. Once ready, these bananas will be used in MLC cooking classes.
The dry top layer of the compost pile has been transferred to the banana compost area, while the matured compost will be worked back into the garden beds. A new compost pile is being created by layering fresh green garden waste with dry materials such as sugar cane mulch and pea straw.
