Preps - Community Helpers Visit

Community Helpers in Prep

Our Prep students are currently inquiring into the central idea “People have different roles in the community.” Over the past few weeks, they’ve had exciting and educational visits from important community helpers, including the local fire brigade from Ormond Station and representatives from St John Ambulance.

Firefighters

The firefighters visited us twice and shared valuable lessons on fire safety.

  • During their first visit, students learned about smoke detectors, the importance of having a safe meeting place, the protective gear firefighters wear, and what to do in a smoke-filled environment: “Crawl down low and go, go, go!”
  • In the second session, the focus was on what to do if clothing catches fire— “Stop, drop, cover and roll.” The highlight of their visit was seeing the fire truck up close and having a go at spraying water from the hose onto the basketball court!

First Aid with St John Ambulance

Our Preps also had a First Aid session where they listened to a story about friends playing in a park, with one becoming unconscious after a fall. They learned a simple and memorable way to respond to emergencies using the DRS steps:

  • D is for Danger – Look, listen, and smell for any danger to ensure it's safe to help.
  • R is for Response – Call out to the person and gently squeeze their shoulders to check if they respond.
  • S is for Send for Help – Call 000, say you are in Victoria, and give your address clearly.

These visits have helped our Prep students understand the important roles that community helpers play and how they, too, can take action to stay safe and help others.
