The first book fair of the year was a tremendous success. We achieved sales totaling $6,176, of which 30% will be allocated towards the purchase of new library books.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Larissa, Nadia, and Cheryl in the office for their invaluable assistance. Additionally, we are deeply appreciative of Lamia and Miss Mason for generously dedicating their time to host the event, allowing students the opportunity to browse the selection, and contributing to another successful Book Fair.
Please be advised, parents, that a second book fair will be held later in the year, conveniently timed for Christmas purchases.
We now have 16 classes who have completed the Premiers Reading Challenge. Congratulations to PEB, PKW. PLL, PLP, 1HQ, 1MC, 1SQ, 2CL, 3BC, 3EB, 4MP, 4NA, 4OB, 5DG, 5TL and 6SC.
Students have until end of August to add books so there is still plenty of time to go!
Each Monday at lunchtime Ms Barteton runs Garden Club for interested students. Last week a group of wonderful Year 3 students helped out in picking up some of the thousands of leaves that were covering the ground.
Now that it has been a few months since the re-plumbing of our water tanks we are already starting to see the impact on our water bills. Our last water bill is $1000 less than the bill for the same time last year. It's great to know we are already saving money (while also looking after the environment).
A big thank you to Lena and Chelsea, two of our Year 6 Sustainability leaders who have created this slide show to highlight packaging we can use to ensure we are committed to bringing in Nude Food.
Mrs Bartleton has summarised an article highilighting the positive impact that caring for the environment at school has on students wellbeing through connections to school.
In a study with over 2200 students in 123 Victorian government and non-government, primary and secondary school, there was evidence of a significant relationship between the Resource Smart Schools program and student wellbeing.
94% of primary students agreed or strongly agreed that their school cares about the environment. Students who felt that their school cared about the environment and embraced sustainability, were also more likely to exhibit higher levels of wellbeing in terms of happiness, optimism, perseverance, engagement in learning, and connection to and pride in school.
When schools run RSS programs, students feel that their school cares about the future and they are empowered by having a voice, taking action, and making a difference.
Many students (39%) reported that it made them feel ‘happy’, ‘good’ or ‘proud’ that their school was encouraging environmental sustainability. Students’ also reported positive feelings about the importance of caring for the environment, making a difference or taking action in their schools and contributing to a sustainable future. A small number of students also mentioned that their school’s involvement in the RSS program made them feel safe and healthy.
Some students believed their school’s involvement in the RSS program implied that their school and teachers cared about the environment and their future.
“Being in a resource smart school makes me feel good to know that the school I’m in cares for the environment and that the school I’m in is trying to make the world a better place.” (Year 6)
“Caring for the environment makes me feel confident that in the future there will be a sustainable world to live in. The schools ok.” (Year 6)
“Makes me feel like i will actually have a future and so will my kids.” (Year 6)
