Year 12 County Court Excursion

VCE Legal Studies

The Year 12 VCE Legal Studies students have been granted the wonderful opportunity to participate in a school tour excursion to the County Court of Victoria. This allowed the students to meet with a judicial officer and observe court proceedings. Kaylee Gleeson, a VCE Legal Studies student, has written the following summary:

"On the 21st of May, 25 Year 12 students who are undertaking the VCE Legal Studies program were lucky enough to be invited to the County Court for one of their school tours.

Tarneit Senior College was lucky enough to be one of the first schools invited back to the County Court after COVID, and we were extremely grateful.

Students, as well as our amazing legal teachers Nina and Cameron, arrived at the Tarneit station at 8:00 am for their departure to the city. After a short walk, we were introduced to Tyana, our amazing tour guide and lawyer for the court.

We were fortunate enough to view two sentencing hearings and view firsthand how mitigating and aggravating factors come into play when it comes to sentencing a case.

We were also introduced to the incredible Judge Davis and her associates Emily and Genevive, who took time out of their busy schedules to discuss and answer our many questions.

We were extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to experience firsthand how the courts function on a day-to-day basis; as well as provide huge appreciation to the individuals who had taken the time out of their days to make our experience as wonderful as it was."

The students received excellent feedback from County Court regarding our students' behaviour throughout the day:

"We just wanted to thank you for a wonderful visit to the County Court. We hope students enjoyed speaking to Judge Davis and were able to put their studies into context while observing sentences before Judge Karapanagiotidis and Judge Kelly.

We also wanted to thank students for their excellent questions and for being so well behaved during the observations. It was lovely to chat to so many of them between matters. I’m sure you and the school are very proud of them.

We hope those that want to go onto study law feel inspired to do so and remember there are many pathways to the profession."
