CLASSROOM NEWS!

Fortnightly Fun in Prep/1
Firstly, congratulations to our very energetic Prep/1 students who all did an outstanding job at the Athletics Day in Bendigo last week! It was wonderful to see all the kids participating in the different events, and making new friends from the Loddon Calder school cluster. Its always a highlight for our Prep/1's to spend the day catching up with their Kinder mates who have ventured off to other schools.
We are busily consolidating our additive thinking skills in our maths lessons this fortnight, paying particular attention to partitioning numbers and learning our number bonds. The Prep students have been mastering their number bonds to 10, while our Grade 1 students have been learning to partition numbers up to 20 into two and three parts.
During literacy, our Preps have been introduced to the new sounds 'e' and 'n', while the Grade 1 students have been introduced to the 'or' digraph. We have continued to write our class story, focusing on using capital letters and full stops in the correct places, as well as creating a story that has a clear storyline.
2/3 News!
In the 2/3 room this fortnight, we've had an exciting opportunity to learn with Miss Kerr, our pre-service teacher, as well as show off our athletic skills at the highly-anticipated Aths Day. We loved sharing our appreciation for our volunteers at the Volunteers Day Lunch, and welcomed our families in for Education Week Open Morning!
In Maths, Miss Kerr has been teaching us about all things shape-related; focusing on building our understandings of key vocabulary such as polygons, 2D, 3D, parallel lines, edges, vertices and faces. We have learnt that some shapes can possess 1, 2, 3, 4 or even more sets of parallel lines!
In Literacy, we have been learning about doubling the consonant of some words before adding -ing such as running, skipping and winning (wow, that just sounds like Aths day!) in our Spelling lessons. We have loved applying our comprehension skill of 'visualising' in Reading, as we churn through our chapter books. In Writing, we have been enjoying extending our stories through the lens of the 6+1 Traits of Writing, as we try to understand how a range of accurately-written sentences fluency can enrich our writing. Next, we look at how conventions can add that extra level of sophistication!
COOKING
We've had a little reshuffle, which sees me, Mrs Luckman, returning to the cooking role. Firstly, I’d like to extend my sincere thanks and commend Mrs Wilson for the tremendous job she has done with our students and the program. It’s clear they’ve learned a great deal and were able to showcase their skills beautifully.
I’m incredibly passionate about our cooking and gardening program – bringing food to life from our garden to our plates. I love seeing students learn about where their food comes from, how to prepare it, and the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with creating a meal from scratch.
Be sure to check out this week’s cooking! The senior students created meals based around one mystery ingredient. They were responsible for planning, preparing, and serving their dishes within an hour and a half – truly impressive work!
4/5/6 with Miss Childs
Our class novel 'His Name Was Walter' has started to get very interesting. The novel has introduced us to lots of new vocabulary such as 'Spectre'... which means ghost. We are learning to identify unknown words and to look up their meaning to ensure we are gaining a full understanding of what we are reading.
In writing we are starting to apply the literary devices we have been learning about (similes, metaphors, personification, onomatopoeia, etc) to our own narratives. So far we have been using picture prompts to spark our imaginations and are writing interesting introductions that hook the reader in.
In maths we have been learning about 2D shapes. We have learnt how to classify different shapes and describe them using their features. We wrote our own, 'What Shape am I?' clues and read them to each other to see if we could guess correctly.
Can you guess what 2D shapes these are from the student's clues:
Shape 1- I have 4 sides and 4 vertices. All of my sides are the same length...?
Shape 2- I have 4 sides and 4 vertices. Not all of my sides are the same length. I do not have any parallel lines...?
(Answers: Shape 1 = Square, Shape 2 = Kite)
