Book Week
Last week, the students had so much fun celebrating Book Week. It was an exciting week filled with book activities, competitions and our book character parade. What an incredible turnout we had for the Book Week Parade this year! The school hall was filled with excited students and teachers and of course, the parents who came together to support the parade. Students, teachers, and staff alike enthusiastically joined in the festivities. The cheers and applause from the audience added to the excitement and energy of the event.
I would like to thank the parents, teachers and students for the effort and creativity put into their costumes. Everyone looked amazing. Your support and encouragement are instrumental in making this event such a success.
Throughout the week teachers ran competitions in their learning spaces. All the students had so much fun throughout the week joining in all the activities and competitions. Thank you for the amazing entries. The Year 6 curriculum leaders had a hard time choosing the winners. They told me next year I had to have more winners.
I would like to congratulate the following students on winning this year’s book week competitions.
We are looking forward to next year’s celebrations.
Helping your child with their skip counting.
I read this article recently by James Russo and thought this would be a great activity to send home. Very easy to set up and play and with great benefits in helping your child skip count and look for the pattern.
SKIP COUNTING BINGO
In this article, James explores dice and a 100 chart to play a game of Bingo. It is suitable for 2-4 children.
Materials needed:
How to play:
Children each choose 3-5 bingo numbers in turn and mark these on the chart.
(Note- players must choose numbers greater than 10.)
One player rolls the 6-sided dice and all begin counting by the number rolled, using the 100 chart to help keep track of their counting, for example, if they rolled a 4, then they would say, 4,8,12,16…. Children top counting when they encounter a bingo number circled by one of the players or with a counter on it . The player would remove the counter or marking they placed on that number.
The dice are rolled again and a new skip-counting pattern is explored. For example, if they rolled a 3 they would start counting at 3, 6,9,12,... until they land on a bingo number made by one of the players. They would then stop and the player who marked this number would remove their counter, marking.
Play continues until one of the players removes all their counters, or markings. During the game or after playing, ask your children, “What is the best number to place your counter on? and why?” “Are you better off choosing larger or smaller numbers and why do you think that ?” "Can you see a pattern in what we are counting?"
Have fun playing this game, and exploring the patterns in our number system, can you see connections between the different skip-counting patterns?
Keep practising skip counting
F-2 students and the times tables ( Year 3-6 students ). Don't forget to count backward too. That is the area we need lots of practice.
I am away enjoying some Long Service Leave and will be back for the start of Term 4. Enjoy the start of spring this week and I hope you all get a chance to rest up and enjoy the holidays.
