S A P L I N G S

Last week, Mrs Lange brought in some lemons from her over grown lemon tree. The children were super keen and excited to explored the lemons.

We first began using the juicers to squeeze out the juice. Many of the students wanted to taste the lemon slices, scrunching their noses and faces from the sour taste. They then created lemonade by adding water and sugar. They took turns to add more lemon juice or sugar, adjusting the taste according to their individual preference.

In this activity, the children demonstrated their curiosity and willingness to try new experiences and tastes. We have also seen this willingness in our new school lunches program with many of the students feeling more confident to try new foods and different tastes. Exploring new foods and developing willingness is vital to their emotional and sensory development. The practical activity of making lemonade allowed them to exercise decision-making and problem-solving skills - deciding the right amount of lemon juice and sugar to add.

Based on this experience, and the joy and enthusiasm shown by the kinders when it comes to cooking, we will begin to explore the concepts of 'sweet' and 'sour' and begin making other observations of different foods we cook such as hot or cold, soft or hard and different colours and textures. By exploring the different taste sensations using various fruits and vegetables this will begin to enrich their sensory and cognitive learning.
