Kindergarten visits GNLC

One of our local Kindergartens, the Amiga Montessori Kinder, decided to create an excursion to Good News for the Four-Year-olds.  These little ones will be starting school next year and this was a first taste for them of what a big school looks like on the inside.

They did not come a long way but the journey from the other side of Caraleena Drive in the rain was a long way from their cosy kinder and they seemed very apprehensive to when they arrived.

Activities included visiting the Junior Library where Senior Library Leaders and School Leaders read them a book and then allowed them to select something themselves to read. Students did a tour of the Junior School seeing classes in action. Hopefully we will some of these faces in our community next year.

Feedback from the teachers said that the students enjoyed this excursion very much.

Bookweek 2023

Although every week is book week at Good News Lutheran College, last week was special. The CBCA (Children’s Book Council of Australia) Book Week was a great opportunity for us all to focus on what we love about books.

In our Junior school there were two book parades as Year 3 did not want to miss out due to their camp. This just got us all in the mood and the chat all week was about what we would be wearing on Friday when staff and students dressed up. Some classes even picked a theme.

Storyteller Jackie Kerin came to visit Prep to Grade 2 students demonstrating how you can tell a story with a piece of string as well as telling stories with her Japanese Kamishibai box at lunchtime in the library.

There were many lunchtime activities such as making Flip Books and Calligraphy in the Junior library. The Senior school had the first annual Literary Quiz where students from Year 6 to Year 12 battled it out in three rounds while eating Bertie Botts Beans and Book Worms, not very nutritious but right on theme.

Book week is a great way to get everyone enthused about reading, book characters and stories. It was great to see everyone participating. Monies raised on the dress up day will be donated to Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation (ALNF)
