National Health and Physical Education Day

This year National Health and Physical Education Day is celebrated on Wednesday 6th September and here at Good News Lutheran College we will be celebrating it the whole week from Monday 4th of September to Friday 8th of September. The theme of HPE day is ‘Good for Children, Good for Schools, and Good for Communities’.

The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of, and advocate for, a greater focus on Health and Physical Education within our schools. This is important as Australian school children rank among the lowest in the world when it comes to their physical activity levels. To tackle this problem, they need to be taught skills and have better knowledge and understanding of how to lead active and healthy lifestyles.

The following activities will be offered that your child may have the opportunity to participate in:

  • Health and Physical Education quiz
  • Just Dance
  • Skipping and Hula Hoop play
  • Middle and Senior Penalty shootout challenge
  • Staff vs Year 11 and 12 students Netball Game
  • Junior School classroom teachers are encouraged to take their classes out for 10-15 minutes of physical activity.
  • Allowing students to eat a healthy snack during class time with a discussion regarding nutrition.

Parents and caregivers play an important role in promoting an active lifestyle for their children, and there are heaps of ways to get involved!

You can support us by:

  • Actively commuting with your kids to and/or from school. For example: Walk, ride a bike or skateboard all or part of the way to school instead of taking the car.
  • Instead of heading straight home after school, go to the local playground, park, oval or beach. Fly a kite or throw a frisbee. Play games like tag, jump rope or hopscotch in the backyard.
  • Teaching your child/ren new skills to help them be physically active – like how to skip, ride a bike, skating, throwing, catching or hitting and kicking a ball.
  • Being a positive role model and showing your child/ren how you plan to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Examples include taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Get off the bus one or two stops early or take the dog for a walk with the family at the end of the day.

Thank you!
